Shut up, Meg
Because of injuries I bike a lot more than I run now. I commute by bike every day in the twin cities, about 19 miles a day. My main bike is a surly cross check, and in the winter I use studded tires. I actually kind of look forward to the cold of winter-- the days way below zero are kind of exciting.
I rode the Rat Penat this morning wearing flip flops on a 40 year old Peugeot and gapped 3/4 of a group of matching-kit club riders on full carbon. I felt bad about that.

Look up Rat Penat. It's steep, I'm a decent climber, and since I've been waiting for my next work thing to come through, I've probably been riding 2x as much as any of those guys.

I started cycling some coming back from an almost 1.5 year hip injury starting in 2013 just to add some volume as I upped mileage, but was having enough fun to give it a full season or two go and see what I think.
Pretty happy with the progress I've made so far, just need to get back down toward the 59kg I was in my best running fitness and not the 70kg I am at right now.
1700 miles bike/450 miles run year to date
Last couple of years usually end up at 3000/1000 miles for the year.
I am not a triathlete and basically race bike or run only events.
I managed a 5:11 mile on a woodchip trail this year (don't ask)
and a 57:XX 15K running. At this point I just race small local events and usually end up on the OA podium (a whole bunch of 2nd and 3rds the last few years). Not because I am a good runner, just small pond and a little lucky.
On the bike I am an uspectacular Cat 3. I got 4th out of a breakaway in
a Cat 3/4/5 masters race, that is the best result of the year so far. Baker City in 3 weeks is the big race for the year and then lots of CX in the Fall.
40 years old
bikes:
Trek Superfly 29er hardtail
Cervelo P2K (TT bike)
Serotta Couer d'Acier (road race bike)
Bianchi Campione d'Italia
Soma double cross (CX race bike)
Chinese (unbranded) carbon fiber bike (building this up right now).
I'm actually planning to go back to mostly running in the Fall and try to BQ again at age 40 next spring.
I'm biking about 120 miles per week. Definitely need to get the mileage up. I ride a 6 year old Trek aluminum. Achilles injuries forced me off the road among other things. By the end of last summer I would bike 20 miles the am and run 5 or 6 in the pm. Not there yet.
frogs, how many miles per week you riding ?
Great subject-thanks for the post!
Runner for 33 years. Having a blast still racing (low 19's) at 60 and then the wheels came off. Could bike with bum knee and foot until operations at 62. Kept biking and got decent, riding with the club 2nd group. Could do up to 21mph for 68 miles with a bit less than 2k of elevation. A bit faster on less miles. Knee and foot healed and started running again this past fall. Did 3 duathlons in Spring, placing well and top 3 ranked (I know, big deal). Struggling right now-probably did too much too fast. Riding easy now with no running. Would love to get back to running F/T but realize it ain't gonna happen. It's all a balance now.
Can go anywhere from under 100 to 250 (no where near this in 2015 so far-live in the Northeast) miles/week.

There is little honor in "gapping" a pack of freds.
Cat 3 racing is anything but "unspectacular!" And, your run times are great! You should easily get the BQ. Good luck!
Medium, do you plan your bike workouts by time or miles ?
Care to post what a weekly bike workout looks like ?
Thanks !
Used to bike 200+ miles per week due to an achilles injury, rode a Specialized Tarmac. Did some racing, got to know a lot of people at all levels of the sport. Just got tired of the time commitment, the danger (one of my friends died), and the lack of females and people under 40, and went back to running.
15 miles a week
Cervelo P5-6
Got passed by a Fred on a bent
Run 2miles a week
About 250-300 mpw on the bike, 30 or so running.
2013 Giant TCR
Just started racing this year, but the last 2 weeks I've been able to make the breakaways at TNW with the cat 1 riders. The area where I live has a whole lot of short punchy climbs but unfortunately only one or two long extended climbs where I can really ride away from everyone. Still beats living somewhere that's pancake flat though.
Raced a duathlon this year and came in 2nd which apparently qualifies me as an "Elite Duathlete," whatever that means.

It means that you are not very good at the humble brag.
My training is really unstructured, it just depends on what is happening in any given week.
I have been averaging around 150 miles per week for the last 8 weeks or so, but last week was 230 miles. Long ride was 78 miles with a Cat 1 climb, not that hard and I also did a 68 miler with a few hard efforts on some climbs. Raced a 24 mile TTT, which really wasn't hard because we only had three and our third was really weak, not even a tempo effort. A few random miles (mostly commuting) and two five mile runs.
This week was total opposite. I rode about 70 miles total, but did 5 x 1000m on the track and also ran two legs (13 miles total) in a team running relay and ended with about thirty miles of running.
I really don't do any bike workouts, I do some longer rides and usually try to get some hard efforts on the climbs. Do the occasional Strava hunt, go out and try to move up some leader boards for a workout. I've only been on one Tuesday Night World Championship this year, but hopefully I will do one this week. I raced one ITT and four road races. I actually have done 4-5 track workouts and a few tempo runs as I was trying to break a 5:00 mile. Basically I mostly do moderate training and use a race a couple of times a month as most of the hard efforts.
This basically makes no sense as I am simultaneously making a half assed effort to get my run speed back to where i can run a sub 5 mile, meanwhile my A race is Baker City which has two 85 mile stages, plus a crit and a TT.
I am 40 year old single guy and just like to compete. If I actually got focused on biking or running and then really targeted training for a few specific races I might actually get some results.
I am basically the best rider in history.
It's not that hard.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
