Promote reality TV and texting. Good for self-esteem and health, as well as teamwork and social skills.

I was at a big race this morning and saw a lot of kinda chubby girls laughing, taking a bunch of selfies, and preparing to run a two hour half marathon. Don't think they fit your picture very well.
Keep your daughter away from the patriarchy, and she'll be just fine.
You should probably keep her away from me
Just keep your daughter away from the metrosexuals, she'll be fine.
Yeah, I let my daughter run and she ran 8/16 in high school and 8/15/3k/3SC in college. She never had a stress fracture or other serious health problem. She married a really nice guy from her team who now makes $250k+/yr in finance at age 34. She has two wonderful kids, a nice house and a happy life, and can still run a sub-18 5k, so running was a real mistake for her. Right.

Must have married someone on these boards. Isn't this where everyone over $250,000 and under 14:00 hangs out?

AIDS
Running can actually be quite the antidepressant and self esteem boost. For all of the life lessons of running–persevering when the going gets tough, delayed gratification, dealing with success and failure with grace, appreciating teammates by your side–it would be a sure shame that your daughter missed out because you were afraid of what happens to some female distance runners. It's all about the culture and the mindset of the runner and people she's around (coaches playing a HUGE role in this).
If she doesn't get caught up in perfectionism by running, there are plenty of other outlets (namely grades, people pleasing/sorority garbage) that will certainly provide her the opportunity.

What you are experiencing unfortunately is the way competitive running amplifies already existing or dormant problems. Especially if things don't go way the girl hopes they would. Females have a much tougher time dealing with expectation and disappointment. I've coached hundreds of girls, and it's always a drawback versus the boys.
