It depends how hilly it is outside.
treadmill
mentally & physically
Fam can run a sub 4 mile on the treadmill.
So what's harder for Fam, sub 4 on the track or sub 4 on the treadmill?
No matter the incline, treadmill is always easier. Treadmill running is not really running, you stay in one spot. Might as well lie down and take a nap or watch television.
Treadmill at 2% is harder and it's not even close.
the belt actually helps propel you forward so that you do less work.
Outside is definitely harder. There's a 2% incline everywhere and possibly wind. The treadmill propels you.
This spring when I trounce everybody at the races I will be able to tell them that I didn't run at all this winter. Obviously those 8 hours a week on the treadmill haven't had any benefit.

The TM at 2% is by far more difficult compared to running outside on a track or flat road.
2% treadmill is a littel more effort. 1.5% may just about equate to flat outdoors effort.
Also, you'll find that if you are too flat (1.0%) on the treadmill you will not be working your hamstrings as much. You need at least 1.5% for the extra push-off exertion.
Do a controlled heart rate test both outside and inside...preferably at the same temperature of course and control for other conditions the best you can and you'll find that the above is true.

Here it is...Worse answer of the day!
treadmill far and away. the heat and being confined sucks, but something about it make the turnover of 6 min pace feel way faster than outside.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
