David Torrence Workout Wednesday, Galen Rupp could do that for a 12 mile tempo!

And yet Jama Aden has the best mid-d group on the planet right now.

This is the type of thing a 63-64 half marathon runner would do, which would probably be the best endurance Torrence has had in his life.

PS - standing rest is just as hard, in some ways harder, than jogging rest.

I watched a girl do almost an identical workout around christmas time. she fnished off with some 400's in 61-62 (i think 3 of them, maybe 4). so, torrance can hang with some of our elite females. bravo.

Plenty of people work out too hard. DT knows what he's doing.

It's fine for a 1500 runner in January.

I know plenty of barely sub-30, sub 14:30, 3:55 runners who could do that workout. That doesn't mean that there isn't a place for it in his training right now though.

I will admit that it was fairly uninteresting for a featured WOW.

By "identical" he probably means "fewer miles, longer recovery, plus some 400s"

Ritz did 32x400 with 400m jog rest in 66 in HIGH SCHOOL.

On January 3, 1977 Bill Rodgers did 8 x 1 mile in 4:55, on a track, with a 400 jog recovery. Big whup.

DT did roughly the same (5 seconds slower), on a dirt path, with half the recovery, and he's a miler not a marathoner.

Workouts aren't races.

Rupp is a 5k/10k guy, Torrence is an 800/1500 runner primarily. As such, his tempo running is obviously going to be slower. Given Rupp's specialty is the 10k, he is going to have a huge focus on tempo running and getting that pace as fast as possible. I bet Rupp tempos at 4:30-35 /mile, which is pretty crazy. Torrence is in his base phase and likely cares more about tempo running as a step better 3k/5k workouts to support his 1500m training. He's getting 8 miles of work in at sub 4:55 avg on a dirt loop - that's damn solid for a miler.

If the "girl" was named Molly Huddle, maybe, but doubtful.

No it's not. That's not even close to a solid workout for an elite miler. Maybe he could get closer to Centro by running those reps in the 4:30s.

Standing recovery is WAY more difficult than jogging. Jogging allows your legs to shake everything out and keeps you loose. Standing makes you stiffen up and uncomfortable. Give it a try one day if you don't believe me.

Torrance mentioned marathoners during the workout, so I think it's funny that according to Ryan Vail's blog, he did a similar type workout last Saturday:

Saturday 10 miles tempo starting @ 5:10 and working down to 4:38 (4:56 average)

Total miles for the day was 15, followed by 18.5 on Sunday. Obviously different goals and different times in the season for these guys.

I for one think its a pretty solid workout for someone 5+ months away from serious racing.

This is a threshold workout for DT - falls under the category of Cruise Intervals (Daniels parlance). It is still base season for him. That being the case it is plenty fast enough as a cutdown for him.

And he isn't Steve Scott or John Walker so why expect him to train as such - they couldn't train at the intensity of El G either, so what?

So many arm-chair coaches here who probably haven't coached anyone in their life. It is frickin' January - NO ONE should be doing higher intensity unless they hope to run fast indoors - pretty sure DT only cares about whether he is ready for Trials in June, then how he races if he gets into DL meets after that.

He described it as a tempo and stated a few different ways that the objective was to get some good volume at a controlled effort. Mission accomplished.

EL G would run his mileage at 4:48 pace (3 min/km).

Being completely ignorant yet hammering DT is a sad way to go through life. But go ahead and rock your 4:30 in March just so you can run 4:40 at the state meet!
