I've probably seen all of the well known mainstream hits of the past 70 years, so give some lesser known options.

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte
Wait Until Dark
I Spit on Your Grave
Don't really watch scary movies because they're usually the opposite of scary. One cold and rainy Sunday night I was alone and watched The Ring and I actually got scared. I told my GF how great it was and we recently watched it....not so scary.
The Loved Ones
Lake Mungo. Creepy movie done in documentary-style.
Don't Look Now
I don't know how well known it is, but Event Horizon scared me pretty good.
Freaks (1932)
Experiment in Terror (1962)
Eraserhead (David Lynch)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 B&W version)

There's nothing scary about Eraserhead. It is just a weird film.
I saw "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" when I was about 11 years old and it about scared *me* to death...haven't seen it since so I don't know if it was actually scary or it was the fact that I was 11 and watching it alone at night...
Original versions of Last House On The Left and I Spit On Your Grave.
Alan
1408 with John Cusack. Great movie and genuinely scary.
It's a Thai movie titled "P." In Thai, the word "pii" means ghost. It has English subtitles, but is very good. Here's the Amazon link:
Here is the movie trailer:
Neither of these are very scary but I've always liked "The Changeling" and just recently watched "Burnt Offerings". I tend to like the older movies. And by "older" I mean before the cgi stuff.
To Gumbys boredom,
You're right Eraserhead is more weird than scary.
'Freaks' is more disturbing than scary. Freaks, which uses real freaks, is not only a troubling movie, but in 1988 it made the top 100 movie list of a panel of film experts from twenty-two countries. (John Kobal's Top 100 Movies)
The black and white cinematography is still crystal clear.
'Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer' might not qualify as hacker/slasher scary...more of a Hitchcock type scary.
By today's standard the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is pretty tame, but in 1956 to an 11 year old kid it was terrifying.
Battle Royale isn't as much scary as horrifying. Imagine The Hunger Games but with graphic violence.
Phantasm. Weird 70"s horror.

Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
