I'm coming off of a bad cross season looking to get a good start for track. What kind of things inspire you as a runner. Books, movies, quotes?

I'm burned out on the inspirational bullsh*t. I had a boss once who gave us a football coach type speech everyday, and it got old quick. Emotion will only carry you so far.
Here's something I read in Running with the Buffaloes that has always "inspired" me:
"WE BELIEVE IN OUR FITNESS, NOT MIRACLES."
No amount of emotion or rah-rah speechmaking is going to change your level of fitness, and it is fitness that wins races.

sweaty tits do it for me.
I'm inspired by knowing that I could possibly win it all.
What an incredible Cinderella story, this unknown comes outta no where to lead the pack, at Augusta. He's on his final hole, he's about 455 yards away - he's gonna hit about a two-iron I think. Oh he got all of that one! The crowd is standing on its feet here, the normally reserved Augusta crowd - going wild - for this young Cinderella, he's come outta no where, he's got about 350 yards left, he's gonna hit about a five-iron, don't you think? He's got a beautiful backswing - that's - Oh he got all of that one! He's gotta be pleased with that, the crowd is just on its feet here, uh - He's the Cinderella boy, uh - tears in his eyes I guess as he lines up this last shot, he's got about 195 yards left, he's got about a - its looks like he's got about an eight-iron. This crowd has gone deathly silent, the Cinderella story, outta no where, a former greenskeeper now - about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac - It's in the Hole!
The better shape im in the more inspired i become...its a snowball effect.
I think its two things. The poster above me hit on on the head. Proven success or even simply improvement will drive confidence. I dont care if you\\\'re a boxer that watches rock before every fight, if you didnt\\\' train you\\\'ll still get beaten down. Running or even work is no different. Spend 95% of your time focusing on concrete training objectives, perferable well-informed ones. Then use the last 5% of the time to get pumped up to succed knowing you\\\'ve done the hard work to put you in the best place possible to do so. Just make sure that you\\\'re goals are relative to your own abilities. Sometimes people get psyched out because they are a 6 minute miler who\\\'s goal is to beat the 5 minute miler. You should be shooting to be better than yourself otherwise frequently your setting yourself up for dissapointment.

I believe the key may be plenty of food, plenty of sleep, and being able to hold back. Make sure you take your easy days easy, or ridiculously easy. The slower you go on a slow day the better. Stress from being lazy in class can also have its effects. Mental stress can be physically manifested. Thus crashing on a test could lead to a crapy workout (or a really great one depending on how you handle stress).
I just don't want to get fat.
I get inspired when I race behind some hot chick wearing extra small butt huggers.
I used to get up and think, "This is what it takes to be good." I would think that on my worse days knowing that I would benefit in the long run (no pun intended).
Good Luck!

i thought winston churchill said that.
I ran a modest 16:44 5k xc in hs and averaged 45 miles per week. I will always wonder what was really possible if I ran 65, 75, 85 miles... Don't be in a situation to look back and wonder.
bliss.
bliss inspires me. i am inspired to get it, keep and and prevent others from having it. step away from the bliss.

Always setting goals, always looking ahead down the road of dreams. Thats what motivates me, the sense that I have unfinished business in the realm of this wonderful running realm wether it be to coach or compete my life intrinsically has been bound up in this area and nothing makes me gladder:O)

For me it's a variety of things.
Good races - to go out and train harder.
Bad races - to go out and train smarter.
My wife - who runs for the joy of running and helps me keep it all in perspective.
My teammates and friends - who depend on me as much as I them when bad things happen.
Local runners who talk trash - because they teach me to talk with my legs.
My coach - who did it better than me when he was my age.
My sister - who was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and does what she can, when she can, the best she can.
The treadmill scene from 'American Flyers,' the post-game workout scene from 'Miracle,' David Crosby's song 'Dream for Him,' and so on, and so on...

I'd have to disagree with you. Your body has limits and then at a certain point emotion and heart is all that you have left. This year I have a saying that I say to myself whenever I feel like giving up. "How good are you willing to become?" This gets you to look to the future and your goals.
Last year I had some regrets in my season b/c I felt I could have done some things different and been more commited. I don't want to have any regrets this year. This is what inspires me.

Right on dude, today during a run i was feeling pretty crappy mid way through a 10 miler. ANyways this is what i kept saying to myself i think its an OAR quote:
"He was suffering, but he was thinking that it is necessary to suffer this; this pain is necessary to grow."
It helped me a lot, and then i was able to finish the end of my run pretty solid/fast.
The following writing sums up my inspiration to run:
Legs burning, stomach churning, heart yearning for the victory. All the trials and tribulations, the pain and frustrations into one sensational electricity. Adrenaline rush takes control of body, heart, mind and soul as I race towards the goal seizing this opportunity. Though some call it vanity, more often insanity they can't take away from me this ecstacy of agony. It's a moment of life's bliss, a reason why I exist, and it's all summed up with a raise of my fist and a point to the sky. My body overwhelmed with spiritual high. This wondrous gift I can't deny. So to Jesus Christ I give all my praise, on and on I will trod for the rest of my days only thanking Him for His glorious ways of lifting me up and making me free, by giving His life on the wood of a tree. So I will exhaust myself so completely, so the world may see God's love through me.
For me, running is truely a gift, and as Pre said, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift." That is my motivation.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
