Recently, I saw somebody mention Kamiakin HS in Oregon in some thread floating around on the boards, and that reminded me of some interesting things that happened to their coach Matt Rexus when I had the chance to meet him one summer.
A few years ago, I was at a summer distance running camp in Kalispell, Montana. The Kamiakin team was also down there, and I watched/heard of all of the following things happening to Rexus:
1) Roughly half his team was taken out midseason by the flu that year
2) On their way, their van broke down in the middle of rural Montana
3) While driving a group of kids to a trail, a van he borrowed from another coach broke down on the mountainside
4) While on a run, Rexus was sprayed by a skunk
5) The cabin he was staying in was flooded
Besides his team's illness, everything else happened within a period of about 10 days. The unfortunate part is, from what I knew, he was a pretty upbeat and cheerful guy, and more and more dismal things just seemed to keep hitting him.
Any other coaches have a series of very unfortunate experiences like that?
