He is starting his first full length world cup in Turkey in hours.. Lets Go Alan!!
He's in 43rd after the second transition. 40 seconds back of 42. He unfortunately didn't make the lead pack on the bike (42 guys in the lead pack). He is ahead of Polyansky and Kanute...
Polanskiy and Webb have made up 15 seconds on that first lap. Can they keep chipping away to the podium? #AlanyaWC
Webb running through the field on lap 2 of the run... Oh yeah baby!!
He blew up. Was :57 down on lap 3 to 1:27 down. He's not off the back. He's running surrounded by guys which is motivating but he's going backwards. Tri running is a different beast. Was a big field with 80 men for the mass start. But being in the mix will fire him up.. Very exciting racing.. And no uncontrolled conditions like being boxed in on the rail
Webb was 45th out of the water, seems terrible but the lead swimmer was out in 19:07 and webb was out in 19:41. just over 30 seconds down, which is great. was really crowded in the water with that many guys..
off the bike he was 43rd... on run lap 4 he was as high as 23rd place.. he finished in 26th place 1:50 down from the winner..
in all, it was good outing.. this was about his head and knowing he can play this game... racing in the mix the whole day and running people down will motivate him through the winter. today he beat multiple WTS regulars (WTS is a step higher than world cup depth wise but WTS regulars also race world cups) so he is ready to race at that level now. lots of good take-aways for webb... his transitions were not bad either. lost a couple places in T1 but was better in T2 heading out to start the run.. he lost no spots there..
Great job Alan!! Welcome to the show....
Also of note is that he was not beaten by anybody with lower world rank than him. He beat Hernandez (world ranked 27th) and he was less than 10 seconds behind Dmitry Polyanskiy (world ranked 6th).
Was Ben Kanute there to pace Webb? Kanute was 5th out of the water than had a very very very slow transition. Basically waited for Webb. Then Kanute DNFed after the bike.
Webb tweeted something that indicated that this was the case. He thanked Kanute for great teamwork etc. Encouraging result from Webb.

Alan Webb @alan_webb1 9h
Look up "team player" in the dictionary and you will find @benkanute Thank you for guiding me in my first WC and full Olympic tri #AlanyaWC
Nice... very encouraging indeed
solid showing
it shows webb in transition 1 standing casually. putting on his helmet. he looks like he is a mini stop after buying a gel on a training ride, not like he is in a race. just chillin??
Can anyone who knows triathlons explain what is Webb's potential ceiling? I wouldn't expect him to be world class in a running race that lasts 1 hr, 45 min, but is triathlon different? What is his potential?
Not Webb that you see on the video in T1. That's Kanute. Webb's bike was further back. He had a bib number in the 60s. Kanute was waiting for Webb. That's why you see Kanute looking back when he is putting his helmet on.
Are there really that many guys running sub-30 for the 10k in tris now?
Tweet from Kanute. Apparently a crash caused the separation from the bike front pack.
Ben Kanute @benkanute · 22h
Frustrating day in Alanya. Able to help out @alan_webb1 and were just about to cruise in the front group. A crash ended our easy day.
you're right. its kanute in webb's suit. read that he had to borrow webb's kit. you can tell because he has hair and webb doesnt! going so slow at T1 coz he is waiting for webb...
What's webb's potential... dont compare it a 1:45 steady state effort.
its 3 - 4 minutes at VO2, back down to just below LT for 13 minutes, exit swim, stay at LT for T1, get on the bike, sit in and back down to 60-70% mhr (unless hills or working on the front, then throw in spikes at LT or higher), then run 30-32 minutes at just below LT....
its lots of fartlek. cumulative effect is not like Webb racing a 30k time trial on the track.. its easier or more difficult. really depends on the race course and day.. and the person. some people can race well with lots of change in effort/pace... some not so much..
hope that answers your question....
