I believe iron is also lost in GI bleeding that occurs in runs of certain duration. The compounding losses of iron is not a big deal for male runners, but when female athletes get the added component of their menstrual cycle - it puts them at higher risk of anemia.
From first hand experience, I've met 4 female runners who have all dealt with anemia but I've never met a male runner that has.
I coached a male runner who was anemic. He struggled his freshman year. Got blood work done after a pretty bad xc season opener his soph year. He went from 30 min 8k to 27:30 in a month. He became a totally different runner. Huge confidence boost, challenging for the win in races. Ended up breaking 25 in the 8k his junior year.
Frosh times- 2:07, 4:20, 16:39.
Soph times- 2:00, 4:00, 15:11, 32:20.
After seeing such a huge improvement, getting blood work done is a MUST for distance runners.
