In highschool senior year I ran a 52 in the 400 meters.. I haven't trained seriously since then (I was an 800 runner in highschool with a 2:04). Is it likely I can break 51 this SPRING? How hard is a 52 to 50?

Obviously it is possible if you train hard for it.
I ran 51 senior year of hs as an 800/1600 runner. 3 years later as a junior in college I switched to just the 400 (after making modest improvements in the 800/1500 over my hs times). I ran 50.04 that year and was quite disappointed. Your experience may be the same, or you may improve to sub 50. You don't know until you try.
It is a reasonable goal though if you go for it.
Not enough info. Was high school over 20 years ago?
Highschool was 2 years ago. And I trained with the distance squad all 4 years. 400:52, 800:2:04, 5K: 18:30.
I only started to focus on the 400 in the middle of senior year track season.
I'm pretty confident I can run 50.x this spring.
I'm just unsure what kind of training I should be doing from now to spring.
You certainly seem more like a 400 guy than a 800 guy. A distance guy who can run 52 in HS should be 1:55 or lower.
Can you break 50? Depends more on your 100 and 200 times rather than your 800 and 5k. If you are 24.x for 200, then it seems less likely. If you are 23.x, then, yea, you should be able to.
In either case, work on your speed in the 150-300 range. Being able to run fast and relaxed until the final 100 will be the key. Then your distance runner back ground might help you the final 100.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
