I have been training on trails in 0 drop barefoot shoes, but worried that a marathon is going to be too much road. Should I consider racing on a 4 mm drop or stay with 0 and padded?

do your long runs on the road in some of your shoe options, you'll know which feels best
I ran a marathon in Wave universe 4 without any issue some time ago.
I have also trained for and run a marathon in NB MR00. I didn't feel like it caused anything wrong (apart from the cobblestone sections late in the race that did hurt a little).
I used a pair of Wave universe 5 (2 mm drop, soles not very firm but very thin) for 10 km races and a half marathon. They are fine if the surface is quite flat, but cobblestones or just irregular asphalt are a little troublesome in them. I got exactly the same feeling as with zero drop shoes. I would hesitate to wear them for a full marathon, though.
All that is just about comfort. What is best in terms of efficiency is a good question and I'm not sure. My guess would be a few mm more don't change the outcome much (say, up to four mm).
Thank you! I am trying to do a sub 3 and I want to nail the shoe. Newtons claim to be faster which is intriguing. Will a 4 mm provide for a faster gait? I am looking at the NB00 and the skora fits. Thanks again for your insight.
Don't buy into the gimmicks. Race in the shoe you've trained in. If you're just trying to break 3, the weight of your shoe isn't going to make or break your race.
You're better off wearing the trusty 11oz trainer than taking a risk for a 5oz racing flat that could give you grief during the race or even cause injury
Do Newtons have a spring in them? If so, why aren't they as controversial as Spiras?
