Its that time of year again where XC is starting up, it seems that every year I come into XC with a great summers worth of work and it seems that I have all of the tools but I never seem to come close to my potential. In XC I have only managed to run 26:48 for 8k despite having prs of 4:20 for the mile, 2:33 for the 1k and 8:44 for the 3k. I seem to struggle at running distances over 3k despite doing all of the strength work required (80+mpw with long runs between 14-18 mi) and having great tempos. I am starting to think that it is my mental approach to the race. Before the race I get very nervous and during the race I feel winded running around 5:10 pace despite it being no where near my top speed, its very frustrating because I feel that I should be around 25:30 but it seems that every xc race I begin to fall apart around 1.5 miles. I was wondering do all of you feel the same feeling of Oxygen debt and heavy legs and have a way of handeling these feelings or do I seem to lack the skills needed to run a quality XC race? I just keep getting so frustrated and I really want to just start reaching my potential at XC instead of constantly running 27:00.
