How many of you, if described as a Renaissance Man, would more or less agree with the statement?

I'm a master on topics such as the marathon, HM, 10000 m, 5000 m, 1500 m, I have passing expertise in the sprints and can, in a pinch, discuss ultras.
According to Nick Symmonds's mom, being a Renaissance Man requires:
* Finding an academic field you like and getting good at it
* Finding a sport/artistic activity you like and getting good at it
* Having a likeable personality
By that I EASILY make the cut. I don't know if that's enough. Is there anything more that should be added? Flagpole?
Leonardo da Vinci was the quintessential renaissance man. He was passionately driven to explore many fields of study and he made astounding discoveries and advances in almost everything he set his mind on (except perhaps his ill-fated flying machine). A true renaissance man is well rounded and skilled in many different fields. Distance runners are skilled in the art of self loathing, but that's about it.
Could Da Vinci have mastered the art of trolling? I don't think so.
In today's world, in order to be considered a renaissance man the following must be true:
- Skilled artist (2d or 3d)
- Skilled programmer
- Skilled athlete
- Skilled communicator (digital, written, or oral)
- Philosopher (able to argue from different points of view)
- Charismatic
Probably add bisexual to your list.

Yes, I'm sure da Vinci was a good programmer.
Gimme a break!

Re-read the first three words of his post.

IN TODAY'S WORLD, dude.
That was actually a good list.
What about Renaissance Women? What kind of backwards values are those? Why are you assuming there are no women on LetsRun?
No one has ever called me that, but now that you mention it, I think I am. I'm not an artist, but I am everything else on the list above, plus a decent builder and designer. And I have a talent for psychology, language, options trading, and data analysis.
Not at all but I do have a broad enough range to cocktail chat on most topics that typically encompass socializing at a group get together.
I clean up well enough to take home to mom and dad and I'll have a seemingly insightful view of some corner of mom and dads business and social interests.
I know enough generational specific cultural icons to follow and comment on most 'history of me' conversations over passed canapés and glasses of bubbly.
If all else fails, and it often has, can do 3to4 minutes on the quality and presentation of the hors d'oeuvres.
If I'm still in the clutched of Aunt Doris or "Call Me Buddy" the siding salesman after the liver pate changes color I can doze them off by talking about third party shared ownership life settlement investment strategy.

Hmmm, very interesting, I thought I was at or close to this level as well, but I was going to say I do consider myself a renaissance man. What would you say it is that you're still lacking?

number 3 pretty much eliminates all distance runners

Uhhh... because there pretty much aren't any women on Lets Run.

This rather sounds like a description of an IT nerd having a blog where he blogs about every crap from different points of view. I guess that fits you (and you think that your 18min 5K qualifies you as a skilled athlete). Sorry, you're not a renaissance man and your list is BS.

Wake up, dude, computer skills aren't for "IT nerds" anymore. Computer skills are necessary to succeed in the modern world. And that is only one item on his list, which was quite good. Maybe you can post your much better list for us here.

It's a start- and a huge leap over the majority of LR users who think skid mark crafting is a high art.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
