My training partner has been struggling with injuries the past few seasons and has decided to spend his base phase doing low milage (35-40 mpw) but quality. His PRs are 4:36/9:52/15:55 for some reference. His typical week looks like this:
Monday: pool workout (1 hour)
Tuesday: 1 mile warm up. 20 minute tempo (5:40 pace). 1 mile cool down
Wednesday: 8 miles (6:00 pace)
Thursday: 1 mile warm up. 12x400s in 75 with 2 minutes rest. 1 mile cool down
Friday: 7 miles (6:00 pace)
Saturday: 3 mile warm up. 10x200s in 34 with 1 minute rest. 1 mile cool down
Sunday: 11 mile long run (6:30 pace)
Do you think this is effective use of the base phase? Or do you think this could result in burn out / lack of endurance by the end of xc season? (He's shooting for 15:30 on a flat xc course)
