Hello, I just heard that my XC team has an incoming freshman who ran 58 for the 400, 2:13 for the 800, and 5:05 for the 1600 (I think he probably could have run faster than this, but not sure if he ran it in his last meet) as an 8th grader. He ran these times on very little training, he's not one of those kids who comes in already running 30 miles a week for a couple years. He also basically tripled or quadrupled every track meet (ie. did the 800, 1600, 200, 400, etc.). I'm pretty sure that was mainly just because he had fun doing it, not because he was chasing times or overtraining. Our varsity returning team should have one of two guys in the high 15s, as well as a couple of guys in the 16s this year. Does that kid have a chance to make an impact on that level? Also, with some actual training, although I know it is always hard to predict with middle schoolers, what could he possibly run in track next spring? He says he is committed to running distance.
