I'm gonna be a junior this fall and I started running last summer (3x a week 20 minutes @7:30 pace for the whole summer). I did a 5k turkey trot with this training and got 18:24. I didn't race at all after that but I did a mile time trial alone in 5:24 in November. I loved running and I kept doing this until I started indoor track in December of my soph year and started running 3-4x week for 45 minutes @7:30 pace and some striders. I did some core work and not enough hip/knee strengthening exercises. I started doing workouts like 2x200m, 4x400m, 2x200m with 1:30 rest. Or 3x400m, 2x600m, 4x200m with 1:30 rest. I also did some 20-25 minute tempo runs at about 6:00 pace and felt fine. Then I tried out for spring track and made with a 5:19 mile (I needed a 5:30 to make it so I didn't kill myself pointlessly...meaning I could've gone faster) the weekend before outdoor started I broke my wrist and couldn't run for 6 weeks. I did the elliptical for 45 minutes 3x a week and some core but it didn't help at all beside I came back and ran an 11:05 3200 and 5:15 1600m and 2:22 800m. (Crappy times for me personally) I prefer the 3200 to the 1600/800. The season ended a week after my wrist healed and I only had 2 meets to get those times. I decided I wanted to do cross country and summer practice for xc (Monday thru Friday at a local park) started a month after outdoor ended but I only 3-4x a week for about 45 minutes @7:30 pace. I felt extremely unmotivated. And now I keep missing days or weeks of xc becuase I've been busy and I haven't run that much. I still feel unmotivated. But me and some friends did a 2 mile time trial at xc and I got 10:54) My coach hasn't made us do any workouts just base building. I can still do a 20-25 minute tempo at 6:00 pace. The other week my knee started to hurt during a run so I stopped and my coach said it was an it band issue so I did strengthening for my hips and knees and it doesn't hurt anymore. But I missed a whole week becuase of that. I don't want to get injured but I do want to build up my mileage to about 25-30 (my knee hurt at 30 miles becuase it was too big of a jump) and my 5k goal is sub 17 (I don't think that's unreasonable) thanks for advice and sorry for the long post but please read it all!
