When ordering running shorts for a man what length inseam is recommended? 1.5 inch is way too short and 7 inch seems excessive. I was curious what most male runner prefer for distance training and racing 5k to the marathon.

And the answer is...half tights. Way more comfortable than shorts, imho.
You have to find your sweet-spot... these guys make anything from a split short to 7 inch. This one is a 4-5 inch that I wear, http://www.underarmour.com/shop/us/en/1244174/pid1244174-001
1.5 in inseam all the way. And half tights. But NOT at the same time

I thought:
* Full tights- go all the way down to your ankles.
* Half tights- are what women wear and some football teams- they go to just about the knee- just above or just below.
* Compression shorts are what many male runners wear- go to your lower thigh- like Nick Symmonds, Usain Bolt, etc
* Boy cut are shorter compression shorts that girls wear.
* Spankies- bikini bottoms/underwear like shorts that girls wear.
So I would say to wear compression shorts.
I havent worn the half-tight/compression shorts. I can see how they wouldn't chafe but are they hot?

I believe what I have are marketed as half tights [or maybe short tights] and are something like 5" [7"?] inseam so fit your description of compression shorts.
Anyway, by whatever name, I find them more comfortable than shorts no matter how high the temp.
Watch out when you wear half-tights.... They anyways make me fart. Really bad.
Like seriously. Just awful.

No, those are not called half tights. Those are called capris or 3/4 tights.

Half tights are what dudes run in. Compression shorts are like slider shorts that people wear under normal shorts - those things that accentuate your dong.

OK- I get it. I guess I run in half tights. Yes they are much more comfortable than shorts and a woman friend of mine, who can "talk" to me told me they leave nothing to the imagination.
I'm Italian, what can I say?
I like me 3 inch splits and I won't go any shorter. Most of my running shorts are 5 inch though and that works just find. I don't wear half-tights, they look ridiculous on me.

I do feel a bit self-conscious about that, but hey, I'm old and I think the half tights look less ridiculous on me than splits did when I wore those for races. Anyway, at least I wear enough underneath my tights to leave a little bit more to the imagination than our friend Henrik Ingebrigtsen does. See
http://www.letsrun.com/photos/2014/prefontaine-classic/imagepages/image12.phpfor a shot of him on the start line at this year's Bowerman mile. Circumcised, I believe.
When wearing running tights do you wear compression shorts underneath? Do they make running shorts without a liner so you can wear compression shorts underneath in the winter?
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
