hey everyone! My appt with Dr. M on the 4th went very well. She said I had a "classic case" of a sportmans groin on both sides. They were both about the same size....about 1cm and both compressing right on the nerve that runs to the testicals and the upper thigh. She recommended surgery because of the pain they are causing.
I am still hesitant to fly to Germany for a surgery. Its just hard for me to grasp the concept that I pay for good health insurance and they aren't going to help me with once cent of it. SOMETHING has to be done about that!
I am pretty sure the pain will win out VERY soon and I'll be scheduling a trip to Germany in my near future. I also want to know why the SHs happened in the first place. Was I running too much...not stretching correctly? I don't want to get them fixed only to have it happen again in the future.
Mello----I remember you said you had BCBS and they said they were going to pay?? Any info on that?
garrett
Garrett,
Wait until it tears and then it's an inguinal hernia - then you'll be covered. I'm about to switch to BCBS - I checked w/ their worldwide insurance group and Dr. M is in the network. That doesn't mean my plan will treat it as network according to them though.
It is often an incompletely formed abdominal wall at birth. Dr. M also mentioned something to me about collagen disorder. I think some sports accelerate the problem or require the actions that cause more nerve contact and thus more pain and nerve damage. I think if you get it fixed right it the chances of it coming back are small.
Dr. UM is part of BCBS's Mondial Assistance coverage network. Mondial provides health care to travelers when they are abroad and need coverage because they can't get home without treatment. I would question BCBS very carefully about whether they will cover you on this treatment if you are not traveling abroad for work and elect to go to Germany for surgery on your own. Get answers in writing about their coverage plan for worldwide supported doctors before you do any switching of carriers. I researched this closely before paying for it myself because Mondial is a big client of mine in Richmond, Va and I know their business model well. They primarily focus on emergency treatment worldwide and medi-vac of clients back to the US when they have severe medical incidents abroad. Either way, you will have to pay Dr. UM directly and then go to the insurance provider for any reimbursement of fees you get covered by them.

Mike in VA,
My company is switching so I have no choice. I've just been trying to figure out whether to do it now or later and which coverage plan I should get. So far one person has said I can't go out of the country to get treatment and one said I can. My current provider said I can, but then she it is for sure out of network. Shouldice isn't in either network.
A Renko....Why not Meyers in Philly or Brown in Arizona????? Top 2 in the USA
Anybody know about Dr. Peterson in Vegas?
He prefers the McVay or Bassinni surgery with no mesh.
Does anybody know about this type of surgery?
I am contemplating going there.
Mike in Denver
JCSportsman,
Actually I was starting to think about that. I guess it kind of threw me off when I saw Dr. M and was diagnosed with a bilaterial inguinial hernia. Do they operate on those?
One more thing...
I've seen the name Brown on the forum a few times and googled to find him, but never did. Can you provide more detail?
Nevermind - I guess it was another docotor I couldn't find. Found him on google and I had seen his site before.
Hockey Player
glad to hear you are on the other side. your rehab will be so much easier without the adductor release. Congrats and take it slow.
so you guys are saying an sports hernia becomes an actual ingunal hernia when it tears larger and ur intestines actually loop into your inguinal canal? So then does it make it easier for the Dr because they can clearly see the injury?
Does Dr M allow payment plans? Like pay some grands up front then pay the rest monthly? Or do you have to pay all upfront?
Thanks so much everyone
helpersssz,
I was joking in my response to Garrett regarding letting the sports hernia become an inguinal. That said, to answer your question I would say it depends who you ask.
As I've said, Dr. M told me "the difference is the tear." If you look here -
http://www.leistenbruch.de/fileadmin/docs/UEFA_engl.pdf
- they define the sportsman's groin as the initial form of an inguinal hernia. Everything else going on is a result of nerve contact and muscles being put in tension by the widening groin canal. Other docs appear to have a wider spectrum of conditions that they label as the sports hernia or whatever they like to call it.
They didn't mention payment plans to me. They said they want 4600 or 8800 euro up front (this is a fairly accurate estimate of final costs). A final invoice will arrive 2 weeks post op.
You really don't know what you have yet though do you? Sounds like you haven't even been to a doctor. Go see a general surgeon first before making plans to go to Germany.
Hockey Player, good to hear that all went well for you!!!
I'm about to set up my surgery with Dr. Meyers. Do you happen to know which page/s you have your symptoms listed in this thread? I'm just curious if you had both sides done and how long you've had the injury?
While I'm here, I'd like to say what's up to the crew here. Hello everyone!!!
Though, this thread is hard to find, I've gained more knowledge here than with any doctor i've seen, with the exception of Dr. Meyers.
I've been injuried 24months. My pelvis is tilted/torqued and my hamstrings/adductors are tight and lower leg/knee feels weird. I feel this is all secondary due to pelvis imbalance and once the pelvis is back in position, I feel like my psoas and adductors will free up. I feel there is some lower-cross syndrome going on with me since i feel like a clown when i run. Similar to Albert but not as painful. I saw Dr. UM on the 4th with all the others. She just performed an ultrasound that found the same tears Dr. Meyers MRI found. I had MR autogram on both sides with findings of small labral tear, no concern there for now. I've decided to go with Meyers procedure. My MRI showed RA tears on both side with complete deattachment on the right side. Adductors are tight but no findings on MRI and Meyers said they're okay. I'm hoping to have a similar outcome as you did. I'm still able to do spinning classes, but i do get nerve pain during hill climbs and my tectiles start to burn and my penis goes numb - I have to admit this is the strangest injury i've ever had and think will ever have! There is NOBODY i know that has any clue what this injury is or is all about.
Not sure who all has had surgery before, but for me, starting my fast at 7pm after a light dinner instead of 12 midnight, helps prevent nausea after anesthesia.

Turkdog!
Wait a minute, did Dr. Muschaweck see that you had a bi-lateral tear on your RA?
What is the email f/ Meyers' clinic?
Hi Guys,
I just had surgery Wednesday w/ Meyers. (Came home yesterday only to find my 4 year old has SWINE FLU!!) Anyway, I am pretty sure I saw you there, Hockey Player. I am jumping on to share my experience, and I would like to find any other distance runners who had Meyers' surgery...wherever you are :).
Symptoms: Soreness in right groin w/ running over 9 mos. Started just towards end of long runs. Soon hit me w/ every run.
Arrived Tuesday, July 7 for MRI and exam. MRI 12:30. Made it to Meyers' office around 2pm. Was seen around 5pm by resident, and then around 6pm by Meyers. MRI revealed bilateral tears on the Ab Rectus and some inflamed pubic bones as well as some inflammation around the adductors.
His plan: pull down the injured rectus and sew it to my pubic cartilage as well as slice the scar tissue covering my adductors where they join my pubic bone.
Surgery: went in wednesday morning, he worked on me and a pro football player at the same time. Went fine, woke up 2-3 hr after being put under. Surprise! no pubic hair! I guess I should have asked what would happen. They did bilateral cuts just above the pubic bone ~2-3 inches wide each. Balls, and cut site and low abs were a bit sore.
1 day post op: yesterday i felt much better, and i stopped using percocet -- switched to ibuprofen. Nurses said "no ice" but I asked Dr. Meyers for some ice pacs and he said it was fine for short periods of time (20 min). This helped a ton.
2 day post op: now i have to start walking a mile a day and massage the groin muscles 10x a day! crazy. so i am kind of in limbo as far as attitude...not sure what runners should do to augment/follow the post-op rehab plan. IS HE AMBITIOUS to say in his program that after 3 weeks, I could be running again?
Any thoughts you guys have would be appreciated.
You guys who had just the Rectus repaired and no adductor release will return to action a lot quicker....Josh Hamilton was back in MLB playing CF in 4 weeks.........adductor tears and release add a lot more recovery time
