Random 31:23 10k guy beats Krar, Wardian, etc to win JFK 50 in near course record time 11/23/2013 2:25PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Zach Miller, a 31:23 10k and 15:32 5k guy, won the JFK 50 in 5:38, less than 3 1/2 minutes back from Max King's CR time from last year. Zach has never run a marathon and took 6th in the Bootlegger 50k 2 weeks ago, presumably as a last long training run, but today he beat Michael Wardian, Rob Krar (who dropped just after losing the lead), Matt Flaherty, and everyone else. More impressive than the field he beat is his time, which would've been a course record had he run it in any of the first 49 years of the race. Good for Zach. This is a great demonstration of what fast track guys without marathon/ultra experience can do in ultras.

I saw him right after the finish and the look on his face could only be described as genuine surprise, like he had no idea that kind of performance was coming today.

Speaking from experience, Zach Miller is possibly the most humble human being this planet has ever seen.
Cannot be happier for the kid.

What do you mean? He's not a fast track guy, and he DOES have ultra experience.
Appreciate the performance

You don't have to be a "fast" track guy to be good at ultras. I ran 50-miler in

31:23 is damn good speed. Anton, Dakota, and Kilian can only dream of 5:00/mi pace for 10,000m.

Kid ran tough.

Only on letsrun does running a 31:23 10k make you "not a fast track guy".

Yes, I am highly doubtful that Wardian can run that for 10k.

And by this you mean when there is more than trivial prize money some C-list Kenyans will show up in a minivan and crush all the course records

How does one attain the most humble guy on Earth status?
It seems like everyone knows someone like that and the competition for that must be pretty fierce.

No, he ran 30:21 on that course in 2011, so not counting that as the PR.

His USATF bio says 30:55. Looking through athlinks, there's a 30:54 from 2004 and a 30:59 from 2009.

I think any 2:17 guy can run that fast, so I see no real reason to doubt.

Wardian probably took the first 10km of the 2007 Olympic Trials Marathon out under 32min when he lead Sell, Hall and Meb et al. by over a minute.

30:55 sounds about right for his 10km PR though. Most 2:17 marathon guys are sub 30:00 10km guys.

I'm surprised wardian didn't announce he was trying some stupid self promoting stunt like running two sub 33:30 10ks in one day..... Oh wait that's been done.
