Please, only serious responses. I would really like to gain some insight on this subject. I\'m hoping both athletes and college coaches will respond.
One would assume that a large number of collegiate runners are not unfamiliar with the party scene at their respective institutions. I have a couple of questions:
1) Do the majority of the best runners self-regulate their alchohol consuption, or is excessive drinking pretty much the norm even with the top athletes?
2) I assume that excessive alchohol consumption has a negative effect on athletic performance. What studies, evidence, personal knowledge, etc. are there describing what, if any, truly negative effects excessive drinking has on actual athletic performance? In other words, does getting drunk on a somewhat regular basis (i.e. weekends) have a negative effect on performance and if so, what are the negative effects and how bad are they (understanding each individual is different)?
3) Do college programs have rules about drinking while a part of the team? If so, what types of rules (no drinking, only drink if of legal age, only drink after competition on weekends, no rules at all)? How do colleges that have rules actually enforce those rules? (wouldn\'t the athletes just do it anyway and hope the coach doesn\'t find out?)
The great thing about this message board is that there is so much knowledge about every aspect of our sport out there. I thank you in advance for help and info with these questions.
