I'd run for 2-3 years off of $40,000 a year.
For $75K and up I'd do it as long as I could.

As little as I could live off of. As someone nowhere near that level, running professionally is so much of a dream job that I'd definitely give up a higher standard of living in order to pursue running dreams without having to get a real-world job yet.
Yeah, as little as I could live with. I think most runners would agree.
I would take $20k a year for the rest of my life (adjusting for inflation) if it meant I could run for a living. I'd even take a pay cut once my student loans were paid off and I only had to pay for rent/utilities/food.
I love running, but you gotta pay the bills. It would turn my hobby into a job, and every job turns into a grind sooner or later. $200k for me.
Not very much.
Not much at all. The exact figures would depend on where I was living I guess, but enough to cover food/basic living expenses and split the rent/utilities hopefully with some roommates. If not, just live in a really dumpy apartment to save money.
You must live in a fantasy world if you think you could survive off of 20k a year.

Assuming $0 taxes and solitary provisions: $30 every day for nutrition is VERY generous X 365 equals $10950 each year. This is all you need really, but there is still $9000 left for shelter, bathing, clothing and even leisure.

I spend $1000/year on food. Where would the rest of the $19,000 go?
You must be in high school to say a comment like that.
So you only spend 83 dollars a month on food?
Unless you plan on living as a bum, you do realize you have bills, right? Bills are what grown ups have to pay.
20 bucks a week for groceries is not hard. 2 lbs Potatoes- 1 dollar1 whole chicken-4 dollars1 pound Hamburger-3 dollarsDozen eggs-2 dollars1 pound pasta-1 dollar1 pound Rice and Beans-1 dollarGallon of Milk-3 dollarsLoaf of Bread-1 dollar4 dollars worth of seasonal and/or frozen vegies. The secret is, buy in bulk, lots of Rice and Beans and Potatoes, and stay away from Cap'n Crunch.

I make $15k/yr (before taxes) and I usually save about $5k of it. I even have some crappy insurance... But i don't have a car.
I'd be happy to run for $15k/yr if it included benefits... I'd do that for the rest of my life.

I go through that much food in about 2 days.
yes, living off 20k a year is possible. actually, very possible. hell, bums essentially live for free.
but, i actually enjoy living like an average middle class american. having a car, being able to actually do things, such as go out with friends, go on vacations, buy shit off ebay, and go to a doctor when i am sick, having an awesome uncessary large TV, video games, having steak once a week, etc.
you can't do that off 20k a year. i would rather live like an average american than live barely above the poverty line.
I'd take that 20k a year and get a hut in Iten.

Steak once a week? You won't be living very long, if that's how you're living. Enjoy you're heart attack at age 60. Anyway, you just criticized that other bro for being in high school. Yet here you are talking about your large TV, video games, and frivolous spending. Sounds like you need a lesson in grown-up school as well.

that's awesome.
omg! a steak!
$50k/year would be nice. if i had a family to provide for, add another $50k for each family member, including my wife.

Yeah I call bs. I will easily drop twice that on a night of dinner and drinks. If I had to guess my non-alcohol related monthly food expenditures, it would probably be between $1200-1500, and I'm definitely not into the posh $200 brunches that many of my friends are. Even takeout from a decent Indian place and a couple beers from the deli and you're looking at $50 for a meal in front of the TV.
Considering it would cost me other career opportunities and I could do it at the most for another 10 years, I think $200k is the absolute minimum I would take, no matter how much I would enjoy it...just about the opportunity cost.
