Al Sal and Galen Rupp have proven that a long term approach started at the earliest age possible is the only way US distance runners will ever compete with the African superstars. I think Mary Cain should throw everything into the fire, drop out of high school, and immediately go pro. Competing at the high school and college levels will only burn her out and prevent her from reaching her goals, as 90+% of US female high school stars have shown. Top African women are already at the top of their games by age 18-19, so really she only has 2-3 years left to become a world beater. Running 4:11 off of less than 40 miles/week proves that she has the talent, but her progress will be minimal if she doesn't step up her game. It's time for her to leave home to join an elite training group (Al Sal?), get sponsored, build to 100+ miles/week (mandatory to compete with the best in the world), and just completely focus on competing at the world level. Anything less is selling herself short. It clearly makes the most sense from a financial, spiritual, and competitive perspective. Discuss.
