In my high school, my graduating class of about 500 had 4 kids in it who could run a sub 5 minute mile (I was one of course). The class the next year had ONE kid, and the class after that had ZERO.
My high school had approximately 1k kids in it. Last year 13 of 23 kids on the team broke 5. #14 to #18 were within 5 seconds, #19 was under 5:10. The next 4 were all frosh/sophs.
The top guys on the team were freaky talented, but the majority of them were nothing special. Anyone on the soccer/ basketball/ wrestling/ tennis/ lacrosse teams could have come out and got under 5 if they worked at it for a few years. I'm sure plenty of football players could to, although most of them would have had to lose some weight.
Sure, most people in the school would never WANT to do what it takes to break 5, because they didn't think it was fun/ worth it or whatever. But they certainly were genetically capable of it.
