It seems, on these boards, that there is an extremely common misconception which I would like to address. Whether for the sake of trolling or not, there is the extremely common contention that in order to win a medal at the Olympics or World Championships, one must be able to close outrageously quickly off of an already scintillating pace. Numbers are thrown around like "X has to be able to run a 52 second last lap off of 12:55 pace to have a shot at a medal", or "Y will need to run a 53 off of 26:50 pace if he wants a shot at a medal." In jest or not, these claims are ridiculous and patently false. To demonstrate this beyond any shadow of a doubt, I have taken the trouble of finding the split of the last lap of the winner of the Olympic/WC 5000m or 10000m, and commenting on how close the associated medalists were behind this leader, from 2004 onward. Hopefully, this will put to rest these ludicrous assertions. Due credit must also be given to poster Joe Tetreault, who posted some valuable information in this thread:

5000m:

Final Lap: 52.93
Final Time: 13:14.40
Comments: Bekele and Kipchoge close behind, but 3 of the greatest 5000m runners ever.

2007 Osaka WCs
10000m:

Winner: Bernard Lagat
Final Lap: 52.3
Final Time: 13:45.87
Comments: Incredible finish, but slow winning time.
2008 Beijing Olympics
10000m:
Winner: Kenenisa Bekele
Final Lap: ~53.42
Final Time: 27:01.17
Comments: Sihine second again. Sihine ~2s behind, other medalists ~3 seconds behind. Bekele in clearly dominant form.
5000m:
Winner: Kenenisa Bekele
Final Lap: 53.87
Final Time: 12:57.82
Comments: Olympic record. Brutal last 2K - Kipchoge almost 5s back. Admittedly, a fast last lap off a fast pace, but an outlier, and NO ONE else was close, not even the other two medalists.
2009 Berlin WCs
10000m:
Winner: Kenenisa Bekele
Final Lap: ~56.1
Final Time: 26:45.11
Comments: Tadesse distant second. Bekele extremely impressive, winning time fast, but last lap from other medalists not outrageous.
5000m:
Winner: Kenenisa Bekele
Final Lap: 53.71
Final Time: 13:17.09
Comments: Fast last lap, but final time not remarkable. Lagat close behind.
2011 Daegu WCs
10000m:
Winner: Ibrahim Jeilan
Final Lap: ~52.8
Final Time: 27:13.81
Comments: Jeilan fantastic last lap with Mo Farah very close. Still, final time not exceptional. Bronze, Merga, not even close.
5000m:
Winner: Mo Farah
Final Lap: 52.61
Final Time: 13:23.36
Comments: Final time reasonable, though fast last lap. Lagat and Gebremeskel close behind.
So when anyone says Rupp (who closed today in 52.64 to 13:22.6) or any other athlete is not a medal threat because they haven't closed with ridiculous speed off of a ridiculous pace... this will hopefully set the record straight, PERIOD.
