Letsrun...seriously your picking Shalane Flanagan to win the 2012 Lisbon Half Marathon? 3/24/2012 1:51AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
The men's field is deeper then the women's and slightly stronger; however, the women field isn't a cake walk. I think Shalane can definitely finish in the top 3 against several sub 1:08 1/2 marathoners. Anyone else think Shalane WILL win this year's Lisbon 1/2 marathon?

They said they were going with their heart, not brain. I'm picking her because I want her to win and she has a shot. IT's easy to say she's NOT going to win- it's not a two runner race.

They're racist. Anyone who picks a white person to win a race is racist.

Is that what you're getting at VIPAM?

No actually they're not racist. I'm kinda alittle surprised as I still think Shalane best distance at the time is the 10000m; however, she has great ability. My post isn't a knock against her ability just the quality of her opposition:

Rita Jeptoo (Kenya) (67:05) 2006 Boston Champ Rita Jeptoo ran 1:07:05 to win here in 2007

Mergia Aselefech (Ethiopia) (67:21) Joined the Sub 2:20 club in Dubai and is officially a star of the sport.

Lineth Chepkurui (Kenya) (67:47) Dominated US Road scene in 2010.

Peninah Arusei (Kenya) (67:48) Has run under 69 minutes 9 times in her life, won here in 2010.

Pauline Njeri (Kenya) (67:55) Coming off her biggest victory with a win over Arusei in Paris three weeks ago.

Nadia Ejjafini The Italian ran 68:27 last year but that was a huge jump in performance.

Priscah Jeptoo (Kenya) is a great marathoner (silver at Worlds last year) but not a half-marathon specialist.

Lornah Kiplagat (Kenya) 3 time world 1/2 marathon Champion sub 1:07 1/2 marathoner

Shalane has the ability to join the sub 1:08 half marathon club and weather permitting it may very well take that type of effort to win! With my picking her for top 3 shows the confidence I have in Shalane's ability! It would be nice for an American to win and go into the Olympic with such a notable win.

Go Shalane and Mo!

I don't understand your post. You make it seem crazy for them to suggest she'll win, but you yourself say she can finish IN THE TOP 3. There's only 3 spots there...1,2,3. One of those is winning, two are pretty damn close.

Obviously a poor attempt at trolling!

I suggested I think Shalane could finish top 3 which would be pretty good against such a field; however, if I was to pick a favorite(s) for the win it would be Mergia Aselefech or Pauline Njeri. Do Shalane have a legitimate shot to win? YES do I think she will, No. I really hope Shalane have an outstanding performance and break the American Record but it will be extremely difficult and would be a great achievement if she beats the entire female field!

Dis is a running forum not a literary contest! VIPAM and many others posting their thoughts on running aren't trying to win a Noble Peace Prize. I'm more interested in how Mo will perform then Shalane. Shalane's always consistent in her performances; however, Mo could very well break the AR, run 1:03:50, or dnf because he lose contact with the leaders.

In their case, did they really have a choice between the two?

(going with heart instead of brain. Does this also explain their decision to back George Dumbya Bush twice?)

What is the relationship that you seem to think exists between the Nobel Peace Prize and grammar?

Rita Jeptoo will win by surging away in the final kms. She surge away from fate tola, sabrina mockenhaupt and nadia in frankfurt maarathon but was too far behind from mamitu daska.

Does Rita Jeptoo have a spring marathon coming up?

It seems that most of her half marathons are relativity slow times compared to her 1:07:05 Lisbon win in 2007, which suggests that perhaps she doesn't train the same way anymore and/or she runs her half marathons as marathon training rather than racing for the win.

how many races does she win? she finishes well very often. So, it is quite reasonable to pick her to finish in the top three while asserting that there is no chance she will win. She can hold a pace but when the hammer comes down, she drops back. All credit to her for being the best American women's long distance runner in a long time, including the two bronzes, but I wouldn't place money on her, not knowing what the comp is.

Rita needs to run more agressively since marathons are now a speed race rather than endurance. I watch Frankfurt marathon and she let mamitu daska get away in the first 5km. Her split for 5k was 17:03 and she went through halfway in 1:12:40. Rita needs to push to pace to 1:12:00 for the half. She should learn to not let people run away from her so easily. She was definitely holding back.
