Week 265
*************************
Greetings, 50+ers! Teaching two summer school physics courses is pretty intense, and with both classes having had tests Wednesday, and having to have my TA teach the courses both Friday and Monday, I've been a bit busy since my quick weekend excursion to Wisconsin! Never posted up last week's log, though, truthfully it was predictably non-descript and both weeks have been a little on the light side (my bad experience of long car rides and then running long have taught me to be careful):
Week 264: Total--24.7 miles on 5 days.
Sun: 6.1 easy run + form drills
Mon: 4.3 w/some effort (7:14 avg pace)
Tues: 5.2 Intervals 3x(1000, 1 lap jog rec.) 3:59,3:54,3:54
Wed: 5.0 easyish (7:36 pace)
Thur: off (too hot, then storms)
Fri: off (traveling)
Sat: 4.0 maintenance miles @resort (7:57 pace)
Week 265: Total--28.3 miles on 6 days
Sun: 4.0 more maintenance miles (7:50 pace)
Mon: off (traveling)
Tues: 5.0 w/2x1600 on the track. (6:16,6:25)
Wed: 4.0 Moderate, w/3rd mile @6:36 (proposed 10k pace)
Thur: 4.3 Mostly easy with a couple spurts. (7:35 avg pace)
Fri: 5.0 easy (7:49 pace)
Sat: 6.0 easy trails (~9:00/mi pace)
Heat and travel and summer school have taken their toll, and I've been basically just coasting. Not very focussed and not training fully (no long runs, and the Tuesday interval workouts have been truncated); just trying not to lose too much fitness until I'm able (willing?) to get back at it. And yes, the weight is still 172. The one benefit of undertraining is that I'm never sore these days. When I read about running at college weight, I have to laugh. At 6'0", if I were to weigh my college 132 lbs, people would question whether I had an eating disorder. Even when I'd dropped to 157 at age 50, coworkers would routinely come up to me and ask if everything was alright....LOL.
Welcome Igy, glad to have you sharing your story. A lot of great discussion going on. I'm not sure I have much to add, given that the advice has all been good. It resonated with me the comment about recognizing that aerobic fitness improves faster than ligament strength; this is probably the linchpin to success. We constantly need to be reminded to temper our enthusiasm (as you said, Igy) when the training is going well, and take care of the little things.
DHaaga, why not join us? As for the rest of the Weekend Masters....most of the regular posters are approaching (or have already reached) 50, so why not? And if you haven't reached 50, so what. If you're interested in carrying on your success into your 50's, then discussing with people who have made that transition (or limped into it) will help you get there, just as us 50-somethings listen to our 60+ masters to help us get to 60 (and beyond) successfully. It is a continuum. Oh, and Happy 50th, nyloco!
OK. Once again, I've said a mouthful. Weather is calling for 72 degrees and a 60% chance of rain/thunderstorms for tomorrow's 4th of July 10K; so I'm of still on the fence as to whether to bother running it; it'll actually be more miserable if it doesn't rain. Last chance signups are this afternoon. I haven't even run a full 10K in training for weeks. What do you think?
Good luck to all you running on the fourth somewhere. I'll look forward to a lot of race reports (I hope.)
All the Best!
