It's a taste most puny runner types with their "simple life pleasures" would not understand. Call me when your balls descend.
Your palate will change. You may never like whiskey, or you might one day be able to break apart the different flavors and absolutely love it.
Personally, I don't understand how anyone can drink white wine or american adjunct lagers that taste like beer-flavored water, but to each their own.
Now if you asked how people
drink scotch- then I'm with you.
I don't like whiskey myself. I like gin and vodka. I've tried only a few sips of whiskey but I can't get into it.
It is best to just take it on faith that when people say they like something they are telling the truth. People tell me that they like all sorts of things, and I literally can't imagine how they could like them. I just assume they are telling the truth, or if I think they are lying I don't call them out on it. Just to give you an example: mayonnaise. I am physically disgusted by that particular condiment, the way I would be by fecal matter, but I believe other people that they like it.
I am not an expert. But I find a good whiskey to be quite smooth and cozy. Many tastes are acquired. How many people really loved their first beer or first cup of coffee?
Perhaps if we recast this as:
How can people enjoy distance running? I can enjoy a pleasant walk, but it's hard for me to fathom anyone finding running enjoyable. Is it just an acquired taste that I have not acquired, or is it something people do for the enjoyment of the burn?
the answer will be more obvious?

You don't get the same great feeling after a pleasant walk that you get after a run.
Cheap whiskey is too sweet to taste bad. At the other end of the spectrum, e.g. Jameson, it can be so smooth you feel like you're drinking beer (WARNING: you will get WAY drunker than you would off beer. I know this should be obvious but drunk me always seems to forget).

I have been drinking coffee from a time period before I was old enough to have memories of it, but I'm guessing I did too.
Whiskey will always burn, but it can be a flavorful pleasant burn. Think of it like spicy food. Some people completely do not enjoy that, but some people are like bring it on, I want to try it and I may even enjoy it.
The thing is I find straight vodka disgusting. But whiskey has this oak-like wood flavor that is nice. You have to take small sips because of the burn, but it's actually tasty, especially if watered down a little like with ice or a Jack and coke.
Whiskey does not burn after half a fifth. And good whiskey just gets better.Develop your ol' taste buds son. Get yourself some Lagavulin and stop drinking those Zimas ya' damn pansy. And Coke, what the Hades is wrong with ya'. Would you take a dump in collection can?! Sweet Jeebus, this used to be a hell of a country.

I like whisky and I like the warm burning feeling. I also like the taste and the image. Rum and vodka burn and it takes balls to drink them but they don't taste good to me. Whisky is manly, sosphisticated and drinkable.
Yeah, and loose the coke, unless you're a chick.
Put some ice or water in the whiskey when you're starting so that you can taste it. At first I hated whiskey when I just drank warm Jameson at parties, but now I really enjoy it.
And ignore people who call your masculinity into question for what way you like to drink your alcohol. They're just idiots.
I've been a runner since 1971 and a whiskey drinker since about 1980. Crown Royal- on the rocks. Cheaper stuff- add a little ginger ale.
I prefer Bourbon (slightly higher quality stuff -- 25+ per bottle) to Scotch or Irish Whiskey (Jamesons).
Drink it on the rocks. It sounds like you are doing shots.
Or become a woman.
I love whiskey. Specifically rye whiskey. Neat. With a soda back. The flavor of whiskey varies just as much as wine. I don't like scotch whiskeys. The peat is just to harsh for me in most varieties. Love bourbon and some types of Irish whiskeys. Japanese whiskey is pretty awesome too although the good stuff is hard to find and expensive. Nothing beats warming up with a couple fingers of Bulleit Rye Whiskey (the best for the mid shelf price point) after a winter run.
Just smoke a little weed, you pansies.
Sorry to say, but that's the future, no matter what you think. Alcohol is a solvent, good luck with that.
Bourbon is my favorite whiskey. Of all types, I find the flavors easier to pick out than other types. Scotch or scotch-like whisk(e)y is my least favorite. A hall mark of scotch is smoke overtones and I just don't get off on that. Most Japanese and non-UK whisk(e)y is scotch like (as in the ingredients, just not made in Scotland).
Right now my favorite is "Blade and Bow" Bourbon (about $60 bottle), followed by "Elmer T Lee." ($100 a bottle ) The Elmer T is hard to find though, so I only get the chance at one or two bottles per year.
For Irish, I do like Sexton ($50?) as a daily sort of drinker, or Midleton if I splurge ($200).
Scotch, well Auchentoshan Three Wood is pretty good ($75?), and as generic as it is, Johnnie Walker Blue is good ($200). Islay style Scotch is like drinking liquid rubber and smoke. Nasty stuff.
Mix drinks I like Ezra Brooks or Evan Williams Bourbon (super cheap, under $15) or regular Jameson ($30).
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
