Did Kirani James of Alabama really split one of the top 10 times in history in a qualifying 4x4?
What is his PR for the open 400?

Yes he certainly did, don't know his PR.

World Age record, his PR is 45.01
43.94 would not be a top 10 performance all-time in the open 400, let alone the 4x4. MJ regularly split sub-43.00. A 43.94 split isn't a huge deal for a 45.01 open runner. Last year Borlee split a 43.78 for FSU.
was he 17?

You're an idiot. MJ split sub 43 once and it was the anchor leg of a WR setting 4x400. I may be mistaken on this next statement but I am pretty sure his WR of 43.18 has only been bettered on a relay split by himself and Butch Reynolds.
And 43.94 would be the 8th fastest person ever over 400 meters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/400_metersThat time has been run a lot but only by a few people.
Just in case you weren't a troll.

So now we've all learned a 43.94 split isn't impressive enough. Wow. And here I was thinking guys who split 44s were fast. But this makes it sound like they were triple dipped in slowpoke sauce.
Yeah but ITS A RELAY SPIT. DID YOU MISS THIS. Id say its roughly equivalent to his PR if it was a good handoff.
just my opinion wrote:

Kirani James is still only 17 years old.
That split is an amazing one for sure however it's not surprising that Kirani James would run it. He is an amazingly talented kid.
I think he is still 17.
Uhm... he'll be 18 in september. Probably that will but some perspective in to what you say.
How far do we have to get in this thread to point out that comparing relay splits to the all-time 400m list without any sort of conversion shows a fairly profound lack of knowledge of the sport?
well most people with a "profound knowledge of the sport" understand that splits should be taken with a grain of salt. obviously this a great time, and he has shown what he can do in the open 400 so a sub 44 isn't really that far off??
But just because someone doesn't have complete and thorough knowledge of all things under consideration doesn't make them an 'idiot.'
That he is this fast at 17 is amazing in my estimation. Now if he can actually get faster!
But seriously??? Man, the reading comprehension on this site is beyond horrible.
Split or not, 43.94 is fast. It may compare to 45.01 (I wouldn't know), but that number is fast too. Add that he is 17 years old..and it's sick.
General rule of thumb I've heard a rolling start relay split (ie legs 2, 3, 4) are worth about .7 secs. So add about .7 to the time for a close equivalent to what it would be worth open...........so in this case about a 44.6 open. Still pretty good
'Yes he certainly did, don't know his PR.'
um ever heard of wiki?
I actually thought it was more common, but I looked on pela's lists, did some Excel stuff and these seem to be the only sub-44 relay splits by college guys.

Yes, but why the hell should I look it up for someone else? Having just returned from the meet and watching the kid run the leg from on the start/finish line immediately behind his coach (who nearly had a heart attack), I was confirming the split.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
