Does anyone know what Mr. German Fernandez is up to? I was hoping to see him defend his 1500m title this outdoor but that obviously doesn't look its going to happen

I've been trying to figure out the same thing. If anyone has any info post it up!
Something is wrong at OSU and no one is talking.
I agree. I smell something sour as well. I expected to see some decent performances by now. Although the real season is just beginning.
On the other hand, I am beginning to think that German is a flake. He cannot have one decent season after another. Not clutch, not clutch at all.
He's afraid to lose races, so he fakes injuries.
Well it seems that the guy who stepped on the track in front of him caused him more damage then anyone knows about. He may be running for Gov. of Arizona now! :) Get Aunt kracker out of there!
Probably red shirting. On another note: Kirubel Erassa commits OSU. Hot damn.
The layoff last summer wasn't long enough, so we're having him lay off this summer too!
A lot of schools are sentenced to silence when it comes to their own team, so I doubt we'll hear anything here, but it is definitely odd. Pretty much an entire wasted year for him (though he did help OSU win the title in cross). I guess there was that 7:50 at Washington indoors as well which was very promising. Too bad. Shit happens though. Hope whatever is wrong is at least understood and under control. Good luck to the kid.
Another foreign athlete on the OSU team?
BTW, German was not a help to his team at the XC nationals, unless you call carry their water to be a help. He finished way back and was not even a scorer.

Wrong, he was there last scorer, finishing around 98th place if I remember correctly. As a consequence, he accounted for more than half of OSU's points. Had he finished a few spots lower, Oregon would have won it.
I would guess he is redshirting. Hope he doesn't end up like Jeff Nelson (the former HS 2m record holder)...but it sure does seem that way.
here he was:

I believe there was another OSU runner right behind German, so they would have still won without him.
The dude's got one of the best-looking strides ever but his body is fragile. It can happen with the best athletes in track, football, basketball. Look at Bill Walton, who could have been the best center ever. Still awfully good but his feet betrayed him. Look at LT, who was just released by San Diego. Granted, linebackers HIT LT and that contributed to his problems. But if those muscles and ligaments cannot take the stress required to be a world class athlete, that amount of training every day, you're out of luck. He's got to be careful.
I've thought about those same things for quite awhile now and wonder how much more productive he might have been had he gone to school somewhere else. Everything around Stillwater is hard surface, but there are locations like at Oregon where they have near unlimited soft bark trails for delicate runners like German. Just a thought, but I always wondered why he went to a school like OSU when he could have gone elsewhere with more proven coaching and better facilities.

What is this, a road 10K? For a guy who is injured 60% of the time?
I can only assume that he decided to redshirt the season, but I wonder if this was advocated by the coach or just decided by him to do. Granted that should be a tempo for him unless it was hilly but still. It's interesting that he was a close 2nd too.
I hope to god this guy pulls it back around or it will go down as a huge waste of talent. I know you Oregon haters will cringe but I really wish for American distance runnings sake he would have gone to Oregon. I know, I know he needed a full ride, Maybe he should have gone Pro last year like Jager and gone under Salazar or Jerry's wing and taken the disciplined approach to training and injury recovery.

I thought it was about money - he wanted a full deal and others (i.e. oregon) wouldn't give that, and I don't think he had the marks to get into a place like Stanford.
Proven coaching doesn't mean all that much - A lot of coaches screw up some kids, even a great coach like Warhurst with Mike Woods, not to single him out, but ... Name someone who hasn't screwed up an athlete somewhere along the line?
Better facilities - in hindsight - might have been good, but who looks at that as a priority when in the midst of the pressure of recruiting.
he can still transfer out of conference. rupp is gone, wheating is graduating, Oregon have some money free? could he take a 2/3rds or 3/4ths athletic scholarship and come up with other money (minority grants etc)?
seems the numerous bark trails, alter G and experience of Vinny might make eugene a nice option. in eugene you can run exclusively on bark trails and put in about 20 miles without running over the same part (though not all at once). add to that the dirt trails in the hills.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
