His only title that he has, he's already defended it.
well, can't wait to see the responses to that idea. good luck defending your stance that winning doesn't actually mean winning.
Troll, but if not........soooooo your the person who leaves in the fifth inning of a ball game and proclaims his team the winner the next day

No I'm not. Watch last years race and you will notice all Rupp did was stay right behind Chalenga the entire race. I know its a championship and you race to win but as a college runner or rather just a runner in general you should hold yourself to a higher standard of morals. Rupp has no morals. He didn't want to play fair. I lost all respect for him after last years championship. He didn't race like a champion, he raced like a wuss.
Fair? Well maybe if Sammy didn' want to lead, he shouldn't have gone out so fast in the first place. Afterall, Rupp would have been perfectly satisfied to just stay with the main pack for most of the race and then kick from 1k for the win. But because Chelanga chose to go out so fast, he simultaneously accepted the responsibility of leading the whole race. Had he really not wanted to lead, he could have slowed down enough to let the main pack catch up, in which case I'm sure someone else would have taken the lead. The goal was not to pace eachother to try and run a fast time, it was to win. And as such, Rupp executed his race plan perfectly.
Chalenga went out too hard and died at the end. Rupp ran smarter, and won.

He doesn't want to run a fast time? Why wouldn't he, it's not as if he is running a series of races. That was his first race in 9 days. He had no races after that. Running fast in that race is not going to impact any race he runs in the future. So if his strategy was to sit until 1k then thats sad. Its a championship event, prove that you are a champion. A champion is a winner, rupp proved himself to be a loser.
Yes, a champion is a winner, and Rupp won. According to Dictionary.com a champion is someone who has "defeated all opponents in a competition or series of competitions, so as to hold first place"
And as far as times go in cross country, they hold little meaning due to the variability of each course. Do you really think Kenenisa Bekele cares what time he runs at World Cross? No, he just cares about winning.
i did watch last years race, all 10k of it. And i believe correct me if im wrong, but rupp crossed the finishes line first?
Gebrselassie is the greatest of all-time for sitting on the heels of the leader for 24 laps and then blasting them. This is running. You don't win points for style.

Wow. It's so trendy to hate Rupp that a LetsRun user pretends a Kenyan won the NCAA meet last year? This is astonishing.

Now your statement would be correct if he gets 2nd again this year
Chelanga was the first non-professional athlete in an amateurs race. He is the 2008 NCAA XC Champion.

HOWEVER! I was pissed at Chelenga. It was Chelenga's responsibility and his coaches to prepare for whatever Rupp did. Sammy went out in what like 4:23! Rupp has to spend the energy reeling him in, then when he finally gets there he is supposed to listen to Sammy. When Sammy went out like that I was screaming NO NO! If he does the same this year and Derrick and others reel him in, no doubt Derrick will not pay any attention to Sammy outside of going by him. Sammy made it easy for Rupp last year. If he goes out again like that he better be prepared for whatever they do and have a plan or suffer their return fire when they decide to open up. Either you win or you lose.

This is what I thought this thread was about when I clicked on it..... CAN HE GET SECOND AGAIN???

Rupp's number one objective was NOT to win the race but to win the team race. His job was to make sure that he did not run harder than necessary until it was certain it would not create a problem. Go look at the comments that Simon Bairu made when he won the NCAAs.
Once his goals were accomplished and secure on the team level then he was free to race on the individual level. Of course the two are taking place at the same time so it was not one thing completely then switching to the other but progressively a change in what needed to be done.
Finally, failing to understand racing strategy makes you sound like a very naive poster who does not know much about the sport. Persisting in a naive position after you have been 'educated' about the subtleties of the sport than moves you from naive slowly towards the 'stupid' label on this topic.
I've seen so many people get mad because a runner sits and outkicks another runner at the end of the race. Thats not being a wimp thats being smart. Chalenga could have won that race if he was either smarter or stronger. Rupp was able to outkick him and win because Chalenga was too dumb to run with a different strategy and too weak to stop him.
XC is all about winning. Rupp did, Chelanga did not.
Though I can respect Sam for going all out and question Rupp's toughness, Rupp had a better race in the end.
I think Sam deserves a title for the career he has had, but I don't think he's going to get it. Should be a great race though.

Wait that's the reason why you don't respect Rupp? Really? Of all the goofy things he's done in the past and all the shit that people post about him, that's the reason you lost respect for him? I'm surprised.
Unlike Chelenga, Rupp had a team to worry about. If he ran hard and blew up, it costs his team. If he runs conservatively, he's less likely to impact others.
Also, obvious troll is obvious.

Actually, it's both.
