Losing is unacceptable at The Ohio State University. Being close really doesn't matter. It may for schools like Michigan or Notre Dame and those Florida schools that used to always be in the top 5 every year.

That being said, everyone knows the best college football team in America is in Ohio and it is NOT Toledo.

That's bs. As I said on another thread, that game was a rustbuster only. And on another, USC fans shouldn't be counting their chickens. They are not as good as years past, and the Bruins will be contending shortly. I believe the men of Troy, while remaining a damn good football team, are going to step down a notch. We'll see. Lost in all the hoopla and media reports and sunday-morning quarterbacking is the fact that the Trojans have, once again, fielded an unbelievably good defense. My son and I attended their summer-ending scrimmage a couple weeks back - expecting to watch the offense shine and the defense stumble - and were shocked to discover that the defense hadn't lost a beat since last year!

The offense is stacked with one of the best (if not the best) lines in college football, a pair of terrific receivers (once Ronald Johnson returns) and some very good college backs. What they lack is a star quarterback to make the engine purr ... and young Mr. Barkley has a number of weeks to take on that role.

USC is a step behind Florida and Texas right now, but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume they'll close that gap - and possibly end up a step or two ahead - by season's end. Carroll's teams never begin to peak before November. Give this one time.

If this were a track and field venue, they could have grabbed a flag and run around the stadium celebrating their LOSS!!!

I wouldn't call it luck. USC gave OSU five points with the high-snap safety and the hit crossbar on the field goal attempt. And their defense shut down OSU pretty effectively.

And I agree with SoCal Pete about their potential upside this year, BUT, all of their tough games are on the road, and I just don't see them surviving them all. We could certainly see an OSU-USC rematch in the Rose Bowl (not the championship at the Rose Bowl), in which case I think USC takes care of business. As I said, OSU had their best chance in years last night. Haven't beaten USC since the late 70s.

And don't forget Barkley hurt his throwing arm in the third quarter. There was no "luck" here. If anything, USC had some "bad luck."

I expect USC to finish #1 at 10-2, 7-2 in-conference. They'll lose two to PAC-10 teams this year. The PAC-10 is just too effing awesome again. USC will have the best team in the nation by the UCLA game. I would not expect the biased media/coaches polls to put them as high. I have my own rankings based on team play only.

Recall that OSU gave USC a free touchdown off a horrible interception and another free FG at the end of the first half after the most un-conservative last 2 minutes of any half I've ever seen out of the Bucks. OSU dominated 3.5 quarters but couldn't get it done in the red zone and on critical 3&1 and 4&1's. Got to give USC credit: they fought hard, they took big risks, and they drove 95 yards against a defense that shut them down all night for the game winner. That is two in a row that the Bucks had in their grasps and let go on the last drive. My bet is they get it together for the Penn State game and get back to the BCS, possibly against USC if they lose a conference game this year.

You're seeing the world through cardinal colored glasses if you think the breaks were against USC.

OSU set up USC inside the 5 in the opening minutes, and they missed a blocked punt by a wisp. Bad luck broke both ways, and more against OSU if anything.

Luck wasn't the issue - if OSU had any sort of killer instinct and been able to put a TD instead of FG on the board they would have won.

My larger point is that under Tressel the Buckeyes just have not put up points and created gaps.

I agree that OSU is much more "for real" than I thought. Expected them to lose by 2+ TDs at home, but they kept it close.

Umm, that's what I initially said, oh wise one who opted not to be fully informed about the dialogue before issuing a "cute" remark. In fact, I was the one warning most vocally on this board that this wouldn't be a "walk-over," and that the Navy game meant nothing. Go over to the other OSU thread and see for yourself.

As for the luck thing, luck breaks both ways, and that's exactly my point. I was merely responding to the guy who said the Trojans got "lucky." The Trojans gave the Buckeyes five points, pure and simple. Yes, OSU put up a horrible pick, but so did Barkley to stall a USC drive. Absolutely no excuse for snapping a ball over your punter's head in the end zone, unless it's deliberate though. USC did what they had to do on the road in the loudest part of the stadium on the final drive. That's what good teams do.

It was a fair game. It was a close game. And it was a hard fought game, just as I predicted it would be. You surely didn't see me projecting a USC mauling this time. If anything, you Buckeye fans had USC winning this thing by a larger margin than myself.
