Ok, I can hardly believe I'm advocating this, because I initially thought that Ritz pulling away from the marathon and getting back to more than fulfilling his potential on the track was a smart move. I am still firmly convinced that the legs only have "so many" hard marathons in them.
HOWEVER, Ritz is clearly in the best shape of his life, has had a history of inconsistent training, and is now with a coach that extols the virtue of being "within mere weeks" of being able to run either a good 10k or marathon. I actually think Ritz should strike while the iron is HOT, especially as he is targeting a fall half anyway. I mean, if the guy runs even close to the fabled one-hour mark or under, I think he should give a fall marathon a go (with the intention of running even or negative splits). Then, he can skip it altogether next year and not worry about it again until the 2011 trials.
Who's with me?
