I coach high school XC and track. We have had some average success in our small pond. I think our kids have progressed well and seem to get better each season, but there is one thing I want to figure out. I have a few kids who just seem to struggle with a finishing kick. They can get themselves into good position near the end of a race but cannot find that other gear. What are some things to do to help some of them. I do realize that some of them just need to toughen up and go get it, but there seem to be some who are lacking in this area. We have always used interval/threshold stuff from Daniels as we get into the xc season. I also do some fartlek ladders with then to introduce interval pace.. Usually 1-2-3-3-2-1- then maybe another 3-2-1 (this us all minutes hard and has 1-2 minutes for recovery) especially early in the season. ( in fact this is the plan for tommorrow morning) I was thinking of switching this to2-3 sets of 3-2-1 minutes hard where each rep gets faster so they are practicing picking it up near the end?? Does this make sense?? along with this would it make sense to add a couple short hard reps at the end of intervals?? I often do 2 x 30 seconds hard after a threshold workout. What about Hudson's short steep hill repeats, will those help here??
Some of the kids who are usually at or near the front of races I will tell them to try and set a hard pace to "run the kick out of the kickers." sometimes this works, more often though I find them dying and being outkicked, but at least on the track they often run a better time this way.
Thanks for any advice.
