The race I work for, well the one that pays prize money, pays no later than 2 weeks after the race, unless there is an issue with someone not being a USATF member yet. We do not drug test. We don't pay on race day in order to verify that all prize money winners did the whole course and that there are no "issues". We used to pay right on raceday until we twice ran into an issue where a masters runner sold their bib to an open runner and that open runner finished in the master prize money.
2 months seems like an unreasonably long time to wait, to me anyway. I'd be in touch with them every day until a check arrived, or they told you it was not coming for some reason. There may be a good reason for the delay, or there may not.
Given the current climate related to sponsorships, don't be surprised to see races not paying all the prize money they advertise. I hope it doesn't come to that but... The US Ski Assocation recently announced that they're going to short last winter's winners of the Super Tour, a national Nordic race series. They're shorting 4 athletes $3000 each, a great deal for these athletes to be out.
