So here is the situation. I am a co-captain on our small HS xc team. We are returning 4 good runners this year (2 really strong, 2 better than average) but we have a real hole for the 5th position that was filled last year by a couple of seniors who have now graduated.
We were all hoping that one of our sophomores would rise to the occasion and fill the gap. I played soccer with him growing up, and he was always the star - he would run up and down the field and pretty much score at will. Last year he went out for xc as a freshman but complained of pain below both knees and didn't really ever run in any meets. I ran with him in some community 5k's and he would always do awful - like 28 minutes. Even my dad would beat him. He would always have an excuse (I got boxed in, I got tripped, etc). He seemed to get over the knee pain thing by spring and was actually a pretty good 400 and 800 meter runner in track - not a star, but I think he ran around 55 and 2:08.
He says he ran about 40 miles a week over the summer. He looks pretty fit - I'm guessing 6 feet tall and maybe 135 lbs. But he manages to end up walking part of every practice. He again always has some excuse - stomach ache, tripped, too hot, etc. We've done a couple of time trials (on pretty tough terrain at altitude) and our top runners are coming in sub-18 and he is coming in at 25 minutes. And when he is running, he starts doing this weird thing toward the end of the runs where he scuffs his feet on the ground instead of just picking them up and putting them down. He says his knees are ok.
Any thoughts on what is going on with this guy? Can someone be a good soccer player, a pretty good track guy, but really be this bad at xc? I thought pretty much any fit high school guy could run xc pretty well if they made an effort, even if they are not a star. I'm just not sure if this guy is a whimp or really doesn't want to try, or whether he just really sucks at distance. There are a few other guys that maybe could fill the 5th slot, but it's just really disappointing since this guy seems like he should be a good runner....
Thoughts?
