As my first summer post college comes to a close, I'm getting ready to get back into the grind. I'm going to be working 25-35 hours per week at a part time job, and taking two grad courses at a good research university near my home. I have some long term goals that aren't really relevant to this thread, but for now my main focus is on the spring. I was a 5k/10k guy in college, and this spring, I want to try my shot at middle distance.
We had a few mid-d studs on my HS team (mid 4:20s for the mile, 52ish quarter speed) so I never ended up running anything shorter than a mile in HS except for points in duel meets. My times were 57 for the 400 (relay) 2:05 for the 800 (relay) 4:33 for the 1600 (duel meet) and 9:44 for the 3200 (which I lost to Lopez Lomong at a small invitational haha). I also ran 9:44 for the 3k steeple and 16:30 for 5k XC. In HS, I ran ~50 mpw with lots of tempos, fartleks, long intervals, and strides. I never ran shorter than 800m in a workout in HS.
In college I was a lower end D1 runner, who ran 15:42 as a freshman indoors, but never improved much (15:40 as a soph, didn't PR after that because I got hurt junior year and was a head case senior year). I ran 32:17 as a sophomore in outdoors. Throughout college I was a 65-85ish mpw runner depending on the season, who went too hard in workouts. I PR'ed with a 26:12 for 8k XC as a sophomore.
I took one month off after my last college race (which I bombed) to regroup mentally and physically. During the month of June, I ran 30 mpw. During July, I ran 40 mpw. This month, I've been averaging 50 mpw. I intend to continue this up to 90 in December, adding in threshold and tempo work in October after a 3 mile open XC race to get an idea of fitness (I've run the course often before, and it's home to a major invitational for HS'ers). January and February will see a shift towards interval work, with speed work in March and early April so I can peak in late April/early May at some open track meets.
I want to really test myself at shorter distance this spring, both to get a change of scenery with no stress, no expectations in terms of team points or anything like that, etc.
My goal this spring is to PR at 400, 800, 15/16/mile (whatever) and 3k steeple. My question for all of you is, how fast can I get in those events with just under a year of mid D training? I'm not gonna make this another '4:00 I WILL NOT REST NOW LOOK AT MY TRAINING' thread, but I do plan on posting back with results as they come. Thanks for any input!
