Radio Documentary Recalls John Treacy's Glittering Career
Waterford people love their sport. What's more they love their sporting heroes - names like Alfie Hale, Tom Cheasty and Sean Kelly all much revered. Add to that list the name of John Treacy, Olympic Silver Medalist, double World Cross Country Champion, multiple Marathon winner and holder of numerous local, national and international records.
The Little Man With The Big Heart' traces John Treacy's career from childhood running around the fields of Villierstown, County Waterford, up to running his final race on the streets of Waterford in 1994.
John's finest hour came 25 years ago in the sweltering summer heat of Los Angeles, in the Olympic games Marathon event. Competing in his first ever Marathon, John sensationally claimed a famous Silver medal.
There'll be a host of contributors to the programme, names like Gerry Deegan, Tom O'Riordan, Fintan Welsh, Brendan Foster, Tony Ryan, Jimmy Magee, Ian O'Riordan, Sonia O'Sullivan and not to mention John Treacy himself.
