I've always thought they should do something similar to Ohio.
Early in the season have an "all New York" meet. Every team in New York, from D-I to NAIA to juco, is invited. This could be the new "state" meet. Just a highly competitive event that teams don't have to travel very far for. Crown a D-I champ, D-III champ, you get the idea. It'd be a solid meet with Iona, Syracuse, Cortland, NYU, and everyone else mixing it up.
Then scrap the NYSCTC meet and have the individual conference meets (Liberty, Empire 8, UAA, SUNYAC, etc.) two weeks out from regions. I loved racing the NYSCTC meet when I was in college, but with all of the smaller conference meets and the lack of SUNY teams it seems a little much.
Do you really think Syracuse and Iona would show up to an "all NY" early season meet created by a bunch of average to mediocre DIII conferences? Maybe Syracuse would split squad and send their JV sprinters to run it as a preseason workout.
Here's a tip for your future reference: the only people who care about DIII cross country in New York already post in this thread.
Why not make the Albany Meet where many NY State schools go to already the "official" state meet. There usually is a good mix of D-1, DIII, JuCo, NAIA, etc. there. Granted there are schools from out of state that attend, but why not?
to address a few points:
-gabler redshirted this xc season
-lee berube has supposedly been dealing with a bum hamstring.
Technically speaking its now against NCAA regulation to red-shirt at a DIII school. The only time a reshirt can be granted is if its a medical redshirt. Or if you run for Cortland, Oneonta, Plattsburgh, etc.

all "red-shirting" means in DIII now is that you took off the season with the intent on making it up in your 5th year. it's completely indistinguishable from quitting for a year.
How would one red-shirt, if they arent on the team? In DIII your either on the roster or not on the roster. Roster being the official certified one that is supposed to be kept by the Athletic Director.
People call it redshirting still just because its such a commonly used term - in division 3, all you have to do to "redshirt' a season is '"quit' the team. If your not on the roster, you don't lose eligibility, it's nearly the same damn thing. Only difference is a true redshirt can use team facilities, practices, etc. officially.
And oh wow look at that
a 2 second google search reveals that Gabler is not listed on Geneseos roster for the 2008 xc season. So going by paperwork, he quit the team but best guess is that he is just quitting to get 5 years, tons of runners have always done that, why point out cortland/pburgh/oneonta?

Sorry my horrendous joke must have gone over your head. All of the teams listed have are red in color. So of course they grant red shirts every year.
gabler has had a groin injury since last spring, thats why he didn't join the team this fall.
States
1. Kosgei Ham 24:55(I would think he'd back off a week before regionals without much at stake)
2. Ramsey SLU +47 (See above)
3. Fox SLU +1:10 (Give credit to SLU; traditionally a front running based team has built a fine little pack. Fox, Malcomb and Burnham have finished within 10 seconds of each other in their three most recent races.)
4. Hodge IC +1:12
5. Burnham SLU +1:13
6. Bell IC +1:15
7. Malcomb SLU +1:16
8. Stenuf Naz +1:22 (I predict that the hills and grass of Hamilton won't elicit a break out race from a speed guy like Nick)
9. Brindak RIT +1:26
10. Millard SLU +1:28
11. Donais RPI +1:29
12. Chebot U of R +1:31
SLU - 27
IC - 53
RPI - 81
U of R - 84
So, Let's get onto Regional Predictions individual and teams
Any meet this year that might have UR scoring under 100 must really suck, cause they arent very good. I cant for the life of me figure why everyone has them top 10 all season?
it must be the shoes!!

mark stevens got full body plastic surgery and is waiting in the wings to make his comeback at Regionals, dramatically leading Rochester to a top 10 finish
If you quit the team half way through the season you dont get to keep that season for a 5th year. You would then need to medical redshirt to get that season back.
Red shirting applies when you have started the season and then for some medical reason cannot finish the season. But you only get the season back if you didnt compete for more then 1/3 of your season. Therefore if you have 9 meets and compete in 3 you can still redshirt, but if you compete in 4 good luck in trying to get that season back.
If an athlete doesnt even start the season on the roster then they dont need to do anything with redshirting, they are saving that season right from the start.
So, are the teams who have a shot at qualifying for NCAA's at regionals running their A teams at this pointless meet this weekend? If they do, that might lead to some interesting upsets at regionals next weekend. Hamilton's course is a difficult one and can take the legs out of you for a week or so. Here are my 2nd to last regional predictions.
Men
Cortland
NYU
SLU (If they don't race their A team at states, if they do, they will drop to 4th)
Geneseo
Plattsburgh
TCNJ
Ithaca
Fredonia
Rochester (To those who doubt, their pack is tight)
Rowan (Look at the NJAC results)
Women
SLU (Their top 3 are going to dominate the team race, and their 4 and 5 just get better and better. If their 4-5 have an off race they can be as low as 5th)
Genny
Cortland
Plattsburgh
Ithaca
TCNJ
Rochester
Brockport
Hamilton
RIT
No way plattsburgh gets 5th people seriously need to get rid of their boners for this needlessly over rated team.
If you look at the week by week results of all the teams its definitely feasible that Plattsburgh beats Ithaca. Thats even without Yernye running. (injury?) While I can see Plattsburgh getting past Ithaca TCNJ on the other hand is always hard to gauge. They have that ability to step up to another level at the regional meet.
