The new disc reflects what they picked up about arena rock on tour with U2, and also some far more refined musical sensibilities than their earlier work. Contrary to popular indie-speak, its a great effort.
As for the "breakout," I think they've been a pretty big deal among people who care for a few years now.

I don't think it's a bad effort. As an album, it's still quite good. Unfortunately, as a Kings of Leon album, it is not. I consider it their worst (although there are a couple of tremendous songs on it), and it was disappointing to me because the last half of the CD is quite boring (aside from "Cold Desert") and lacks the typical sound that they exhibited on early albums. It lacks the raw sound that they had before. That's why I love them.
I don't mind the new sound, but would love the less produced sound that they used to have.
