Question about Penn's Attendance Figures 4/29/2008 12:00PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
We're completing the Week that Was and I was adding something about the attendance at Penn.

I was making some comparison to Drake and wondering what percent of the crowd is actually fans and what percent is athletes.

Announced attendance was 49,831.

Wikipedia and a few other sources say the stadium seats 52,593

The upper decks seemed nearly empty. So now I'm really curious as to how they come up with the numbers. I figured 20,000 athletes might be counted in there each day as fans but I'm curious as to how the attendance could be so close to the stadium max. There were way more than 3000 empty seats. Does the 52,593 not count the upper deck?

Or are that many people coming and going throughout the day.

I believe that number(49k) is the total number of people that came over the entire meet, Thursday - Sunday.

Be aware that in addition to people coming and going throughout the day, since there are only a handful of "stadium seats", with the rest being bench seating, that the potential for cramming more people than the listed capacity exists.

My section - SD (on the backstretch) for instance was mobbed. We were packed in so tight that I actually counted the number of people sitting in around us. Our section was listed as having 24 seats/row (we had seats 23 and 24.) In our row we ranged from 28-32 people over the course of the day. The row in front of had a consistent 36 all day, the row behind us had around 32. Many were kids, but none the less, it looked like much of our section had similar things going on.

Franklin field holds about 70k people attendance for Sat alone was 52,900 approx. Although the "franklin field" page says it holds 53k it actually holds a bit more. Confusing I know. All you need to know is Penn rocks Drake, where else does Billy Cosby start a race?

By a number of methods, I was able to get in free all weekend. They did not count me. I know of 10 or so people that did the same and figure that many people did. I have seen it more packed, but not by much. Penn has to start getting "real" pro races...you'll see the people show up.
