After a year of injury-free training I've recently been sidelined by a familiar old injury, one I've successfully treated twice over the past few years by using Aleve (naproxen sodium) or Motrin (ibuprofen) and by sitting on arrays of icecubes.
It's basically a pain in the butt. It's a pain up around the insertion point of the left hamstring. It occured two weeks ago in the aftermath of a 10K that I ran all-out one week after an all-out 5K, this during base-training and with a hard workout on the Wednesday between races.
The symptoms are familiar. There a low ache somewhere in the left butt cheek. When I run, I feel a small but moderately painful tug or pull in that area. Fast running is out of the question. I can easily manifest the pain if, when standing, I take a step forward with my left foot, then paw back. It's not a severe pain--my hamstring isn't torn in half--but it's very noticeable, and it does qualify as pain.
For the record, I'm 48, averaged 45-50 mpw through 2006 with no trouble.
So my question is: am I suffering from high hamstring tendonopathy or Piriformis syndrome? How would I distinguish between the two? What is the recommended treatment for the two conditions, and how does that treatment differ between the two conditions?
Further note: although I was able to slow-jog about 3 miles a day for the two weeks after developing the problem, yesterday I was forced to abort after one-tenth of a mile [sic]. So I'm all ears. Share what you know and what you've learned about these devilish, disabling pains in the butt.
