Possible to eat healthy on 30-40 dollars a week?

I don't think it would be possible for me to live on $5 per day, at least at grocery prices where I live.

Just counting fruit:

Banana, part of breakfast $0.50

A small bowl of cherries (snack) $2 (sale price $3/lb, reg. price $4-8/lb = forget it)

One peach (snack) $1 (sale price)

That's $3.50 right there just for a reasonable allotment of fruit for the day. I often eat twice that amount in fruit.

Wow, where are you shopping or where do you live??(Cdn $'s)Bananas easily found for 50cents/lb or less all year... and a banana doesn't weigh 1 lb.Cherries are expensive, don't have to buy them, 1 lb of cherries is a pretty big bowl. I have occasionally found cherries for $1.99/lb.Peaches are coming into season, can be found for 99cents/lb... several peaches in a lb... in a few wks will be able to find entire baskets for $3 or so.I rarely (never?) pay more than 1.99/lb for fruit, and usually do just fine with 99cents/lb or $1.29/lb limit.

Here is a great protein option that is a healthier choice than beef. Venison(deer) Ive grown up on venison my whole life so to me it taste even better, but if your able to live in a area where deer season is a big deal you can always find people that love to hunt but dont want the deer. Usually for $50 you can have a deer cut up into burger, steaks, loin, even roast. This gives you many options like with the burger combind with some A1 steak sauce soak over night make deer hamburgers with it the next day, of course the usual things you use burger for tacos, chilli, hamburger helper type things. The roast is my fav put it in a slow cooker with lots of veggies, great meal!

My dad and uncles lease land to just hunt, plus my uncle has a business of cutting up the deer. So i've been lucky to have free meat at all times of the year

You getting all your protein from milk? Better put some meat in there or beans or something.

It is very possible to eat healthy and fuel any training you may be doing on a budget of $30-$40 a week. I actually wrote a post about this, and how to save the most amount of money possible on your next grocery trip, whilst still being health-conscious (and able to cook tasty food of course!) Here are some tips.

-Writing a grocery list might sound like a frustrating thing, however, it will ensure your grocery trip is the most cost-effective and time-efficient. You’re more likely to stick to your grocery budget if you write a list!

-The middle aisles hold the cheapest items that last the longest. Keep in mind that this is great for saving money.

-Another nifty tip is to always look high and low in the aisle. Fun fact, grocery stores make most of their money off brands paying to have their product placed in prominent positions around the store, not you as a consumer. The most expensive products will be placed in the middle. Generic brand products often taste the same, so save money where you can here.

-Do your own slicing, dicing, and shredding. The stores always charge more if they make cuts or shred the item for you.

You can, realistically its hard though. You are either not eating as healthy as you think you are, or you are spending more money. Even though "if the furnace is hot enough, it will burn anything", it will work way better with high quality food.

I could make bean and rice burritos or pasta with sauce for every meal, but that isn't "healthy" in the long run. You need to be eating more than just some frozen peas - a diverse amount of fresh fruit and vegetables and nuts/meats will give you all the micro-nutrients that your body needs. And honestly, produce isn't cheap, especially in the quantities that you need to eat to be fueling that much.

I echo what people are saying, look for sales, shop the bulk section, etc. You can definitely save money and do well. But if you can scrimp together that extra 10-20 bucks a week, I don't be afraid to spend it on good, high quality, healthy food. You might as well make sure your nutrition is dialed in for optimal performance, not just enough to "get by".
