Regionals are done. Who is going to step up and win when it counts?
Here are my thoughts:
1. Josh McDougal- I really like how consistently dominant he has been all year. Certainly there are runners who have better track credentials than McD and there are a slew of runners who have already proven themselves on the NCAA's big stage (including defending champ Bairu) but none of these runners (Cheseret, Withrow, Bairu, Boit, Kosgei) have really dominated as Josh has this year.
2. Simon Bairu- Impressive win at Big 10's and an easy jog at regionals bodes well for the defending champ. Sure he has been beaten this year, but as all of the Badger-faithful will tell you, he probably could have won all of his races.
3. Josphat Boit- CR at Shortpepper with an incredible time coupled with the way he peaked last year (finishing 3rd) and what seemed to be no more than a tempo run at the SC Region Race (I watched it) say to me that he will be ready to roll.
4. Bill Nelson- Kind of difficult for me to justify this pick (I think it would be awesome if CU, Ark and Wisco's first guys all finish back-to-back-to-back) but Bill ran a sick race at the Mountain Regional and beat some tough guys (Rohatinsky, Mutai, Samoei) en route.
5. Richard Kiplagat- Although I wasn't at the NE regional race, all reports sound like Kip just toyed with Fagan (a great runner, himself) and didn't expend much energy doing so. Admitedly, this pick could be very, very wrong.
6. Westly K[Ch]eating- Apparently Wes has found the stash he hid away in his dorm room last year and is back in top 10 form. The SC regional course was running about a minute slower this year than it was last year when Boit won in around 29:30... that was Wes' time this year. Although he may have gone a little too hard the week before, I expect he can just take something for the "fatigue".
7. Robert Cheseret- Great on the oval. Might finish higher than this if the weather is warm.
8. Chris Solinsky- The nation's best second man. Has been UW's most consistent performer and was considered to be a favorite last year going into this race.
9. Bret Schoolmeester- Knows how to race on this course (5th last year at nationals; 5th at pre-nats '05) and seemed to return to form at regionals after jogging his conference race.
10. Josh Rohatinsky- Won his race at Pre-Nats, beat Bairu earlier this year and ran pretty well at his regional race; all of these point to a top-10 finish for the Stormin' Mormon.
11. Peter Kosgei; 12. Martin Fagan; 13. Tonny Okello; 14. Matt Withrow; 15. Patrick Mutai; 16. Andrew Lemoncello; 17. Benson Chesang; 18. Stephen Samoei...
Team Prediction:
Arkansas
Wisconsin
Colorado
