Here Are the Projected 2023 NCAA XC Qualifiers (Pre-Regionals)
As it stands, the Oregon men will be watching NCAAs from home
By Jonathan GaultWe are just 10 days away from the 2023 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at Panorama Farms in Virginia. To get there, every team must qualify through Friday’s regional championships, which will play out across nine sites around the country. As usual, the top two teams in each region will qualify automatically for the big dance, with the remaining 13 spots determined based on regular-season wins over qualified teams.
Once again, we are able to project the qualifiers thanks to former Duke runner Bo Waggoner‘s terrific XC Quals site, which uses a computer program to calculate which teams will earn at-large berths according to the NCAA’s formula (you can play around with it to create any scenario).
To get you ready for Friday, we’ve run the program based on USTFCCCA’s current regional rankings. The big news based on the current projections: as things stand, the Oregon men are out of NCAAs. The Oregon men declined to race at the Nuttycombe or Pre-Nats meets, which means that, based on regional projections, their only at-large point is the one they secured by beating Colorado to finish 3rd at the Pac-12 Championships. Realistically, Oregon needs to finish in the top three at the West Regional to make it to NCAAs — either by placing top-two to earn an auto spot or by placing 3rd and getting pushed in by Washington or Boise State.
Last year, the Oregon men finished 16th at NCAAs in the program’s first season under coach Jerry Schumacher. The last time Oregon missed NCAA XC was the COVID season of 2020-21, but the team’s stars Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker were focused on the concurrent indoor season and it’s not clear if Oregon even asked to be considered for the NCAA XC meet. Before that, you’d have to go back to 2011 for the last time the Oregon men failed to qualify.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Cal Baptist men and Tulane and Lipscomb women are all projected to qualify for NCAAs for the first time ever. CBU only became eligible to qualify last season after transitioning from Division II.
We’ll be running the program again on Friday as the regional results start to come in and we should know the complete fields at the conclusion of the final races (shortly after 2:30 p.m. ET) so be sure to come to LetsRun.com to find out who has qualified for NCAAs. We’ll also be recording a live episode of our Friday 15 podcast where we break down the entire field. If you can’t listen live, don’t worry — you can join the LetsRun.com Supporters Club and get access to the full archive of Friday 15 episodes while supporting LRC’s independent journalism in the process.
Here’s who is currently going to NCAAs — assuming the regional rankings hold.
