somewhere in either alabama or russia?
Please stop spreading fake results. This virus isn't political. Or at least, it should not be.
How was that post political?
If anything it was elitist vs Alabama and nationalist vs Russia.
"As many as 61,000 people died in the 2017-2018 flu season, and 45 million were infected."

Nice deflection, however, it's still not even deadlier than the current, mild flu season, much less 2017/2018.
24,000 is still more than 12,800 and no one is in a panic over the current flu.
61,000 is still more than 12,800 and no one packed in 2017/2018
162 children, age 0-4, are still dead from, the flu and no one is panicking.
"Interesting" how much you are rooting for more deaths just to prove me wrong. You should feel very proud.
Why the hate for facts matter. He is rooting for fewer deaths and yet so many of you gloat at every death from Covid 19. The media is almost giddy when a child is infected.

No hate. Like everyone, I hope the numbers are much lower than projections, but his constant comparison to the flu is tiresome. It's apples to oranges. He knows this, but he wants to be relevant on LRC.

The comparison started because of the irrational response to COVID-19 when the flu was actively killing far more people. I kept hearing about what was going on in China and what I saw was a population of 1.4 billion people, a bunch of infections and relatively few deaths. China averages 81,000 flu deaths annually. At the first sign of cases in the US, this ridiculous "mitigation" effort started. The economy killing, unemployment causing, poverty inducing overreaction is something that will be remembered as one of the most embarrassing and reckless moments in American history because the coronavirus will end up being less deadly than a bad flu season.
Sorry you are unhappy about that.

Bro, you do realize the flu season is six months long. Not to mention covid death rate is over 12,000 with only 383,000 cases in just over a month in the US. Just think what it would be with 45 million cases! What aren’t you people getting that covid is far more problematic than the flu? The cdc lists influenza mortality rate as .01%. Right now in the US, covid has a mortality rate of over 3%.
But it has been in other parts of the world for 4 months and yet it lags far behind the flu in total deaths.

The response to the coronavirus is without question going to cause substantial harm; far more harm than the virus.
The death statistics are a complete mess as has been repeatedly demonstrated. Just the lack of distinction between deaths ‘with’ the virus and deaths ‘of’ the virus, shows them to be hopelessly exaggerated.
The role of psychological disposition towards panic needs to mentioned. Some people are addicted to the rush of fear and anxiety they continually subject themselves to by reading yet another corporate media hype-job. They have an addiction to watching various forms of fear porn on their TV's and worse they live in that reality on a daily basis. They not only see that as "their" reality but project it out into the world.
The other smaller but very loud group are the “#StayHomeSaveLives” who now have a platform to perform in, it's their newly minted melodrama where they get to play some kind of "hero of humanity" and gain meaning from participating in this "movement."
All of this over faulty projections done by the "experts" who have admittedly have no idea if they're true or not, and have no solutions. Meanwhile all the media can do is spread lies and fearmonger in an effort to cause the government to fail.
I couldn't buy toilet paper for a f*cking week, and you want to hear how many people have died from this virus in my county with a population of 150,000? 0!!!!!!! I have a family member who's an ER physician and said he's so far treated 0 patients with the virus. I'm calling bullsh!t on this media hoax.

Hillary lost, get over it.
lol
H1N1 was under counted. Plus, most of the deaths have been concentrated in the greater New York metropolitan area. It’s not like things are bad all over. And in 85+% of cases, COVID is just one of a number of factors.

Same as with flu deaths. Just one of a number of factors. Respiratory viruses behave the same way.

The mean comorbidities for an American aged 60-69 is 0.8. Chronic disease is incredibly common in our society. I think there are justifiable arguments about whether our response has been excessive - I strongly feel this isn't one of them.
The measured deaths can be attributed to Coronavirus. Not people dying of other things "with coronavirus". Hospitals aren't swabbing random people dying of cardiovascular disease. They are swabbing people with respiratory illness. Did the background cardiovascular disease make that individual more vulnerable to succumbing to viral pneumonia? Of course.
I don't know if you've ever filled out a death certificate, but there are always contributing causes that accompanying the primary cause(s).
There are legitimate reasons to be skeptical of the fear being pandered by the media. However, I think it's disingenuous to say the people dying are unique because they have an underlying condition or that they are "close to death anyways". It dismisses the reality that this virus kills relatively young and relatively healthy people (i.e. the average 60 year old American). It's not just taking octogenarians.

.
Scratch that - that was Canadian data I was referencing with regards to # of comorbidities. I imagine the American numbers are similar if not slightly worse.

The fact that it's concentrated in small areas is a bad thing, not a good thing.
