I thought capitalism was best answer for every problem?
If we are #1 then why has our response been so horrible?
We pay more for healthcare than anyone in the world, why haven't we gotten #1 results?

this isn't a failure

lol, wut?
Russia and North Korea have done a much better job avoiding the Wuhan Virus. They have almost no reported Wuhan Virus cases or deaths so far.
North Korea appears to be #1 in avoiding sickness in their country.
probably because all the socialist countries are already dying of starvation.

We are close to 2,000 deaths in a week.
Canada has 55 deaths....total.
even accounting for population difference this is a horrific performance and only getting worse
First of all it's not real capitalism.
It's socialized corporatism.
Healthcare is so expensive and inefficient in the US because everyone wants to make a buck off it and the malpractice insurance is not helping either.
If the US doesn't find a way to support small business owners in the next couple of month the country is in for a huge depression, which could last for years.
Actually, the better question is 'why has socialized medicine failed so horribly?'.
Italy is getting crushed, and so are the other beautiful, noble, socialistic fantasy land medical communities.
You should move to North Korea. They don't have any deaths and give their population free cheese. I'm thinking of retiring there one day. Also, all of their beaches are open and they get 364 days of sunshine on average each year. I think when Canada closed their borders they revealed themselves to be a racist country. North Korea is open to immigrants like you and is not a racist country.

A very astute observation.

And add to it, Spain.
Why are they suffering such catastrophic damage and death? I thought socialized medicine was the way? Why are they so unprepared?

Germany and Scandinavia are doing better than the US.
Incompetence + Fool = You. I guess we could do this all day. Let me know when you have something substantial to say.

Spain and Italy are ahead of us on the pandemic timeline. Also, different cultures.
Why not compare us to Canada, a country that is as identical as you re going to get to the US except that it is more socialized in areas like healthcare. They are clearly doing way better than we are.

23% of Italians are older than 65 years old, it’s got the second oldest population in the world. This undoubtedly is having an impact on the death toll in that country.
Well, it's a difficult challenge.
The US was poorly prepared:
- for unknown reasons, Trump fired his entire pandemic response team, and never replaced them. Frankly this is probably down to dementia and incompetence, not malice
- the US healthcare system is one of the worst in the first world (far more expensive than almost anywhere else)
- the US healthcare system is largely driven for-profit, so is run to maximize profit, which leads to poor flexibility
The US administration ignored the problem for a long time -- Trump thought it was a media hoax. This might be because Faux News convinced him of this.
Because of Trump & Faux News success in convincing many Americans to distrust scientists and distrust news in general, many people ignored basic precautions for a long time.

Why are they ahead of us on the timeline? Could it be the travel ban that Trump enacted in late Jan?
Hypothetical here, but what if there had been a complete travel ban enacted then?
Also, I seem to remember Biden and Sanders calling the travel ban a failure, and racist, etc.
Were they wrong?
