It appears the concerns about the poor and homeless in the huge Asian cities like Delhi, Jakarta and Manila are well-founded.

Keep an eye on Turkey it's been under the radar. A few weeks ago only a few cases but moving rapidly up the list. Istanbul is a huge, densely populated city with a lot of international visitors.

How can India have a complete “stay in your house” lockdown? Some houses don’t have indoor plumbing. People have to go out to a spigot on the street, next to the open sewer, to get water. It also seemed like they have more homeless than California. Hard to believe.
People are allowed to go out for essential services/needs (water, food, milk) but not in large groups. Running/cycling etc is banned. All state borders and major cities' borders are completely sealed off. All trains and flights (except cargo) are stopped. Only essential services offices(telecom, electricity etc) are running with reduced workforce (no they are not fired, just given leave at full pay).
They are slowly increasing testing. isolating suspects, turning trains into movable hospitals and isolation wards. Till now, response of India is much better than expected and other western countries.
I know americans cannot imagine a lockdown like this but it is essential in a country like India where things can go really wrong if left unchecked.

Not just Delhi.
Mumbai (India's financial capital) is home to world's largest slum Dharavi (in 0.81 sq miles area, 700,000 people live). That is why a complete lockdown is essential and people are supporting it(for most part).

All the points are disgusting and xenophobic. India is an amazing country with tons of history and culture. Indians are nice, friendly and generally peaceful people. Yes, India has its problems, but all countries do.
I’m don’t know why the hell you would rate a country based upon its athletic achievements. Completely stupid.
Coronas are cold viruses. They don't do well in warm weather, which most of India currently has right now. Maybe in the northern extremes.

Thank you. It is rare to see someone saying positive things about India on an american forum.

Was in India for two weeks and just came back in time.
I 'could believe' their low numbers at the time. Most of cases in world originate from travellers, eg in Australia 68% and direct contact from those another 21%.
I saw no Chinese there in my two weeks, zip, none. Very view anglo/westerners
They got their first cluster from Indians touring in Italy, but they were repatriated...so the numbers have started off low.
They have closed borders early (for them)...yes the potential for rapid spread is there but they have low imported numbers
Western developed world will be largely fine. India scares me. wrote:
Looking at the Chinese numbers of less than 4,000 deaths, I have been pretty optimistic that we could keep the worldwide deaths at below 100,000. However, I then realized I meant that for just the developed world as I thought to myself, "I Have no idea what will happen in these really poor countries like India."
It could be a catastrophe in really poor places if it spreads like wildfire in a super populated place like India. Thoughts?

Rojo, why dont you just post under your own name? Your writing style is a giveaway when you post anonymously.
Anyway, yes, some poor areas are going to get ravaged.
The slums of rio are going to be interesting. It seems hopeless, especially because the government isnt implementing a shutdown. But the gangs are threatening anybody who goes out when they shouldn't, so it actually may be able to slow the spread a bit.
The carribean island nations are also interesting, because while many of them are dirt poor and might seem unable to cope, they also tend to live more spread apart, people grow some of their own food, and the small population size means containment could be easier.
I really hope we dont see millions dead because poor areas cant control it.
IMO, this all showmanship and an effort to contribute to the fear & paranoia the world is so consumed in.
I pointed out in an earlier post that dirty, toxic air kills "1.2 Million" Indians every year!
https://www.google.com/amp/s/wap.business-standard.com/article-amp/current-affairs/air-pollution-kills-1-2-mn-indians-in-a-year-third-biggest-cause-of-death-119040300300_1.htmlWhere was the government concern about this? I guess 1.2 Million lives are acceptable losses.
And 10 million Indians die every year of chronic hunger and hunger-related diseases! 7,000 people including 3,000 children die every day from hunger!
http://www.bhookh.com/hunger_facts.phpWhere was the government's concern about this? 3,000 children a day and the government looks the other away. Again, these must be acceptable losses. You could just as well have a daily "worldometer" showing the daily body count from starvation in India and no one would give a damn. But have a virus circulate the world and the government imprisons their people for their "safety & well-being." Lol.
I've never seen a more coordinated effort by global leaders to lock down their population creating tremendous fear & panic when a lot of countries could give a damn about their people any other time!
What is the relevance of these straw men to an infectious disease?
The poverty and pollution is real, but in the context of development level, should they address those instead and forget about Covid19....how ;long do you think that will take?
Please grow a few more brain cells and don't compare apples and oranges.
I agree with pollution and poverty issues you pointed out but how does that mean govt should allow people to die due to another reason ?
You are implying - since india is so polluted and people die of poverty all the time, one more reason to die is fine. No, its not. I know you can't but atleast try to understand.
And, no, the govt doesn't look the other way for other issues. But that is the topic for some other day.

This will have a huge impact on the US. Think about all the companies that outsource work to India.
That’s the problem America outsources to India and China. When instead they should paying Americans. The rich get richer and the lower middle class stays lower middle class. It’s high time America starts outsourcing jobs and buying junk from these places.
FFS, what's with all insults here on this site because posters are in disagreement with others? What happen with civil discourse and the "agee to disagree" conciliation? What's with your internet tough guy routine? Fine, you grow some common sense "brain cells" and grow up a little bit.
Have you checked the cases/death rates lately? 933 with 46 deaths and no one currently listed as serious/critical in a country with 1.2 Billion people. Wow...that really warrants a draconian lockdown of a poverty-stricken nation. And do you really think the Indian government cares how people die from the virus? Lol. Many more with die from starvation and other diseases being couped up in their 3rd world shacks where some don't even have indoor plumbing.
It's a power move to lock down the people and protect any spread to their military industrial complex (over a million men strong). Power is intoxicating with governments, and India is no exception. The only thing that government cares about right now is it's military machine and the nukes all aimed at their hatred enemy Pakistan. They and Pakistan want to go to war badly - the hatred they have for each other is off the Richter scale. And if it went nuclear and hundreds of MILLIONS of Indians perished the government wouldn't give a damn as they all would scour to their plush underground bunkers.

Incorrect, I’ve been there 3 times.
I work very closely with numerous people from a India including 2 that I directly manage.
The important aspect of their COVID19 healthcare that could be implemented here is that suspected Coronavirus patients do not go to the hospital. Instead, you call in and health professionals come to your home with a test kit while you self-quarantine. If you are positive, depending on the severity of your case, you will be moved to a hospital for treatment. This helps in alleviating transmission. Not sure how this works with the homeless, but there seems to be no manpower shortage in terms of nurses etc.
Also guys, I know this is the rough and tumble world of LRC, but come on now...enough with the racial/ethnic stuff.
