I just see it as Rupp and the rest are JAGs to put it in other sports terms, Hall and Meb weren't JAGs. There is one elite men's distance runner in the US right now, only one that won't get obliterated on the world stage, 2:09 isn't competitive at the world level.
JAG as in Just Another Guy?
Rupp has 3:50/7:30/12:58/26:44 track credentials. He has two olympic medals. He's won a major marathon. He's been on the US team nine times, and has 11 US Championships between 5k/10k/Marathon. He has five individual NCAA titles. He is easily one of the best distance runners in American history.
Hall still has the unofficial Marathon AR on Rupp. That's it. Hall's track PRs of 13:16 and 28:07 aren't special. He has two US team births, one US Marathon Championship, one NCAA title.
Yeah Hall was a good marathoner, the best of his generation. He was near the front of a few majors, and broke 2:09 a few times. But you seem to be under the impression that he was the real deal, and Rupp is a pretender. It couldn't be any more opposite between them.
As for the rest of America's "best" marathoners...you're right; mostly nothing all that special. Mostly nothing that will compete for medals or wins. Mostly just trying to be "first American" in the majors. But that's been true for a long long time. It isn't that Hall's era was something special, and today is weaker. Its that Hall was by far the best of his era, and Rupp is by far the best of his own. And Rupp is by far better than Hall too.
