It is a catch 22. People start overeating usually to self medicate in some way. The more overweight you become, the more your brain atrophies, leading to deeper depression and bad decision making (which leads to more overeating). Brain atrophy (leading eventually to dementia), starts at least 30 years before any noticeable symptoms show up. The first symptoms (brain fog, perpetually bad mood, bad decision making) are usually attributed to stress or "life" and not taken too seriously. Your behaviors that you choose (eating healthy, getting some exercise, getting enough sleep, curbing alcohol consumption), every day, either accelerate or decelerate this process.
Also, the food pyramid that us 80's kids grew up with was basically a "get fat plan", with a diet based heavily on grains. It closely resembled a plan published for farmers around the same time as a way to successfully fatten livestock. The original version of that food pyramid would have been healthier, but special interest groups lobbied for their preferred tweaks and the final version ended up being a plan for obesity.
Now we have devolved to the point where the typical American is eating a diet filled with stuff that should not even be classified as food. Makers of processed food spend a lot to concoct "food" in a way that screws with our endocrine systems, so that we don't get the message that we are full and we crave certain foods more. We allow food in the US with additives that other developed countries don't allow.
Proposing that tax payers split the cost of healthcare in this country without overhauling the "food" regulations is basically creating an enormous money pit. Many people now realize the cost of eating crap and have taken charge of their own health. These people do not pay much into the healthcare system. The powers that be want that money. They want my money, even though I grow my own vegetables and only go to the doctor for a check up every year or two. With universal healthcare they get my money whether I want their product or not, or even whether I ever use it or not. There are people in this country getting filthy rich off of illness. With universal healthcare they will become much richer. Do you think that those people really want to see a healthy America???
If the government was really interested in improving the health of Americans, then they would address the problem before they start throwing more money at the symptoms. We are eating ourselves to death, not just by the amount we eat, but by what we choose to eat. If it didn't grow in the ground or have a mother then it is not real food. It's pretty simple. There is no such thing as a Cheeto tree!
