So I really dig Foo Fighters and will acknowledge that D. Grohl is a genius, but I just don't get Nirvana. Yeah, they've got some hits that helped define a very lame and uninspired generation (mine) FWIW, which is very little. But what is it about Nirvana that cements them as one of the greatest rock bands of all time - for their short time at least?
Hits aside, cite specific songs or albums please. I've got a disc collection entitled "With the Lights Out" that die-hards refer to as the gospel, but just don't feel it. I'd like to, but maybe this band was as bland as my generation? I'm open minded with music and feel I may be missing something here. Help me out.
I was about Kurt Cobain's age, and was hugely into "grunge" (for lack of a better word) at the time. At the time, they were the one of the greatest things I had heard in years, and I was a huge fan.
In retrospect, although I still really like them, I don't find myself listening to them as much as some other bands from the era, like Screaming Trees, as I think Nirvana has been overplayed over the years and has almost become classic rock. I think part of their appeal was their undeniable influence, and how they shifted the course of popular music. Hair bands (who I now have much more of an appreciation for, ironically) disappeared literally overnight. But they also had some really good songs too. Aside from the "hits" check out most of Bleach, plus things like Breed, Drain You, and Lounge Act off of Nevermind. And some of the B-sides on Incesticide like Turnaround, Son Of A Gun, and Aneurysm.
